Cyber Security Manager
Hey there, Cyber Security Managers. Fancy leading a small team of direct cyber reports? Want to make your mark on a brand-new role? Free breakfast sound good to you? The financial space appeal? Call yourself a Jack Of All Trades?
If your head was nodding or you verbally said “yes” to any of those, maybe you’ll like this one.
Before jumping into the nitty gritty, you want to know what’s in for you, and that’s a-ok. Below are some of the things you’ll receive, and can expect, in this permanent role in Sydney.
- You’ll receive free breakfast in the office each and every day, yum
- You’ll be up for a bonus which is paid annually, a combination of individual and business performance which historically has been in low-mid double digits (as a percentage of your total salary package).
- You’ll receive income protection as a staff member – this will be covered entirely by your employers. Not bad, eh?
- You’ll receive wellness hours per month to spend… however you want Attend a yoga class? Sure. Enjoy that long and luxurious lunch? Why not. Just… go home early? Uh-huh. You get the picture.
- You’re going to be reporting to a diamond of a Manager. This is subjective, but if you gel with people who are down to earth, pragmatic, shoot straight and genuinely want to kick some security goals, you’ll like this Manager.
So, what will you be stepping into, and what will you be doing in this brand-new role?
Firstly, you’ll be joining a small-medium enterprise who’ve established a multi-year security journey, and you’ll be the one move things forward and bringing the broader business along for the ride. NIST has been adopted as the main standard, so a chunk of your work will focus on driving NIST to maturity.
Will you be a one-person army? Oh no. You’ll inherit a small but mighty cyber security team who you’ll be managing and guiding, day-to-day. The cyber personnel you’ll be overseeing? They handle things like cyber reporting, facilitating pen tests, and deep dive any/everything related to security engineering. It’ll be on you to manage their workload, assign tasks, specify priority, etc.
It can’t be stressed enough that this is a brand, spanking new role. You won’t inherit anyone else’s questionable decisions or wonky tech choices. You’ll be the one who gets to make the calls and advise on the best way forward. Want to put your stamp on something? This could be for you.
All that aside, you’ll spend your time tackling things like engaging with projects, developing and maintaining the cyber strategy which aligns with goals of the broader business, educating people on cyber importance and the cyber challenges which you’ll overcome, truly leading and directing the cyber team and support it as it grows, running tabletop exercises, understanding the privacy act and general regulatory compliance requirements, understanding business systems (and the broader context), engaging with security vendors, etc., etc.
It's worth noting that this business spends 4/5 days in the (Sydney CBD) office and will expect the same of this Cyber Security Manager role. We understand that’s not everybody’s cuppa tea, and that’s ok, but know this from the get-go.
For some more info on how you’ll be spending your time, think along the lines of…
- Advise the business on security architecture practices.
- Own, and foster, security vendor relationships, and oversee security vendor assessment.
- Conceive of, plan, and execute ongoing continuous improvement cyber practices.
- Develop and manage cyber policies, procedures, and standards.
- Monitor and respond to alert escalations from service desk and engineering teams.
- Manage and refine security programs such as penetration testing, security awareness, vulnerability management, etc.
To succeed in a role like this, what will you need?
Given the breadth of this role, it’ll likely suit a Jack Of All Trades type; someone who can point to a deep, wide tech background, but who’s also across the cyber compliance and strategy piece. As you’ll be THE Cyber Security Manager it’ll be on you to, well… manage the cyber security… in its entirety. You could be tinkering with tools/tech one day, translating governance to laypeople another, and generally winning (cyber) hearts and (cyber) minds all the while.
The below experience, atop everything else in this ad, will keep you in very good stead:
- Prior time spent in a similar role; leading and owning a small cyber function.
- Broad experience with security tools including Firewalls/WAFs, SOAR/SIEMs, vulnerability management, etc.
- Solid, foundations knowledge of major frameworks like NIST, Essential 8, CORIE, PCI-DSs, etc.
- Demonstrable understanding of cyber incident response; planning, processes, procedures, etc.
- Strong cyber governance experience – can you point to understanding of the frameworks mentioned above?
- A tertiary qualification in a related field, or industry certs like CISSP or CISM wouldn’t go astray, although this role will ultimately be assessed on merit, not certs, rest assured.
If any of this has piqued your interest, please consider applying. There’s much more information – technical and contextual – that can be shared with you on a confidential basis which may help you decide if this is the job for you.
