The Opportunity

The Human Geography section in the School of Social Sciences is proud to offer a Richard John Bryant Estate PhD Scholarship to fund a graduate researcher working in the broad field of climate change adaptation in the Indo-Pacific region. The successful applicant will join our excellent research cohort within Human Geography and undertake their PhD project under the supervision of leading academics within Geography. The Human Geography team have broad research expertise and leadership in the areas of social, political and institutional analyses of climate change adaptation, climate resilience and disaster risk reduction across the Indo-Pacific region. The PhD project, while open to negotiation, will be expected to focus on topics aligned with geographical perspectives on, for example, the social and/or political (environmental governance) aspects of climate change adaptation at one or more locations in the Indo-Pacific region. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who live in the Indo-Pacific region.

The School of Social Science at Monash is diverse and vibrant, including research expertise in geography, anthropology, sustainability transitions, sociology and politics. The School of Social Sciences also has strong ties to the Climate Change Communication Research Hub and Monash Sustainable Development Institute. The successful applicant will be based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne. The successful candidate will join a vibrant PhD cohort of over 400 students within the Faculty of Arts.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have a strong academic track record in one or more of the following: geography, environmental sociology, environmental humanities, and governance and policy. Competence in qualitative research methods is essential and quantitative skills are desirable but not essential.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol before the end of 2024. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.

EOIs shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability
  • A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length that fits within the broad project aims and objectives, and demonstrates some understanding of the area of research
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience
  • A full statement of academic records, degree certificates and official grading system (if available), supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
  • English language proficiency test results (if applicable)
  • Names and contact details of 2 academic referees
  • Copy of your current passport (if available)
