About the school
Ipswich West State Special School is a Prep - Year 12 school, catering for students with a primary intellectual disability. The school implements all learning areas of the P-10 Australian Curriculum while focusing on the individual needs of students and assisting them to access their learning through differentiation. Students in Year 11 and 12 engage in units of work and elective programs that align to learning expectations drawn from the QCAA's Guideline for Individual Learning. All students in Years 10-12 access VET courses as well as off-campus skill development programs with local businesses.
About the role
The Head of Department (Curriculum) at Ipswich West State Special School is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and assists in leading the strategic direction of the school. Our school has a highly committed and skilled staff who have a positive and passionate attitude to setting high expectations of our students and supporting them to achieve these expectations.
As Head of Department (Curriculum) you will have responsibility for curriculum planning and delivery across all year levels. Key responsibilities of the role include:

- Implementation of the whole-school curriculum framework in alignment with the requirements of the P-12 Curriculum, Reporting and Assessment Framework
- Embedding effective moderation and case management processes
- Overseeing assessment and reporting practices
- Formalising processes and practices to monitor and track student achievement
- Lead the relevant curriculum areas or whole school program to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
- Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
- Set high standards for student and staff performance.
- Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
- Leading the implementation of effective pedagogical practices
- Developing and implementing staff professional development, including semesterly planning days
- Form partnerships with students, parents, other government agencies, and community groups.
- Be futures oriented and strategic.
- Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students and staff within the school department.
- Manage the human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources of the curriculum areas or whole school program to achieve goals.
