This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants must demonstrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status in addition to addressing the selection criteria. This is a maternity relief position and should the permanent incumbent require an early return from maternity leave, this contract of employment will cease with two weeks notice. Maternity relief positions can be for a period of up to 12 months, with the possibility of continued employment for up to a further 12 months for maternity leave reduced hours, therefore there are no claims to permanency.
About the Role
Join the Central Coast Aboriginal Mental Health Team (AMHT) as a Cultural Consultant and help shape culturally safe and responsive mental health services. This Aboriginal-identified role provides the opportunity to deliver essential cultural advice and advocacy, supporting Aboriginal consumers both as inpatients and in the community. You will work closely with clinical teams to ensure services honour Aboriginal culture, address the impacts of trauma and colonisation, and promote social and emotional wellbeing through a strong cultural perspective.
You'll be part of the Aboriginal Mental Health Team, supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people using mental health services. You will collaborate with mental health clinicians to provide cultural advice and guidance, ensure care is respectful of Aboriginal culture, and be sensitive to the effects of trauma and colonisation. You will assist with care planning and assessments that consider cultural needs, and advocate for Aboriginal consumers to support connection to family, community, and culture, whether in hospital or in the community. You will engage with local Aboriginal health organisations and other agencies to provide well-rounded support and better health outcomes.
This is a meaningful role where you can contribute to culturally safe and supportive mental health care for Aboriginal people.
Responsibilities
Provide cultural advice and advocacy within a mental health setting, working with clinical teams to honour Aboriginal culture and address trauma and colonisation impacts.
Assist with culturally informed care planning and assessments.
Advocate for Aboriginal consumers and support connections to family, community, and culture in hospital and community settings.
Collaborate with clinical teams, participate in reviews and meetings, and share insights to ensure Aboriginal voices are heard.
Build and maintain connections with local Aboriginal health organisations and other agencies to support holistic care and outcomes.
About You
Tertiary qualifications in Health, Counselling, Social Work, Community Welfare, or relevant work experience.
Of Aboriginal descent, recognised by your community, and meeting the genuine occupational qualification for this role.
Strong knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the social and emotional challenges faced by Aboriginal people.
Hold current, unrestricted NSW Driver's Licence.
Skilled in providing cultural advice and advocacy within a mental health setting.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, with experience working with clinical teams and community partners.
Committed to culturally safe practices and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal consumers.
