THE ROLE
The Head of Legal, Families, Public Law and Legislation is a new role in the Legal Services Branch that will report to Co-General Counsel and be responsible for leading four high-performing teams in the Legal Services Branch - the Families and Communities Team, the Public Law and Privacy Team, the Royal Commission Team and the Legislation and Policy Team. The role will also oversee legal services delivered to the Ministers, the Secretary, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and the associated Administrative Offices.
A key focus for the Head of Legal, Families, Public Law and Legislation is to ensure the delivery of high quality, client focused and cost-effective legal services in relation to complex and sensitive matters and provide authoritative and specialist advice on complex legal issues.
ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE
- Lead the provision of authoritative and specialist advice on complex legal issues across the Families and Communities Team, the Public Law and Privacy Team, the Royal Commission Team and the Legislation and Policy Team in the delivery of high quality, client focused and cost-effective legal services in relation to complex and sensitive matters.
- Lead the identification and advise on new and emerging issues within the law and their long-term implications for the department, leading reviews of significant cases to identify system, process and policy improvements, working collaboratively across Legal Services in the development of continuous improvement. Utilise strong specialist knowledge and skills to lead the strategic litigation of matters, providing specialist advice to achieve the departmental and/or government policy aims and reforms.
- Research and prepare written advice to the department and senior stakeholders, presenting legal insights and analysis on cases and developments, ensuring compliance and quality professional outcomes of major pieces of work, reflecting a strong understanding of cross government legal policy and considerations.
