Tallowood School is committed to each student achieving maximum independence and engagement for their post school life in their communication abilities, emotional wellbeing and respect for self and others.
Tallowood School is a Department of Education special school established in 2004 with purpose built facilities to cater for students with disabilities from Kindergarten to Year 12. The current enrolment is 100 students. The school has 14 permanent classrooms and 2 demountable classrooms. All students have a moderate or severe intellectual disability. Many students also have complex support needs including Autism, challenging behaviours, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, and health care needs. All students have a Personalised Learning and Support Plan (PLSP) developed in consultation with parents/carers, therapists and other key stakeholders which focuses on the achievement of person-centred goals.
Tallowood School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School and has a well-established Learning Support Team structure. All staff are committed to Quality Teaching, working collaboratively to develop relevant and meaningful individualised education programs that are delivered in a safe and caring environment. Families are an integral part of our collaboration and we strive to build strong relationships with them as partners in the learning journey.

**Selection Criteria**:
In addition to the general selection criteria,
- Approval to teach special education and/or extensive experience teaching students K-12 with disabilities including moderate and severe intellectual disabilities, Autism, challenging behaviours, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and complex health care needs.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead curriculum implementation with excellence in classroom teaching practice and provision of quality differentiated programs that reflect current research and best practice.
- Experience dealing with multiple and complex challenging behaviours and the ability to support and lead staff to plan for and manage these behaviours.
- A highly visible, dynamic and approachable leader who has proven organisational, communication and interpersonal skills that contribute to a culture of inclusivity, with proven ability to work collaboratively, build trusting relationships and establish effective partnerships with all stakeholders; proven ability to effectively manage complex issues and competing priorities.
**General Selection Criteria**:
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
