The Program:
Australia Assists is an Australian Government program that deploys skilled humanitarian specialists to support multilateral agencies, governments, civil society and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and conflict. Australia Assists' Goal is to: Save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity during and in the aftermath of conflict, disasters and other humanitarian crises, and strengthen preparedness for the occurrence of such situations. The program's Objective is: Targeted deployment of humanitarian expertise that meets the priorities and needs of Australia's multilateral, bilateral and civil society partners and advances Australia's international humanitarian priorities.
The Role:
To strengthen the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) functions of the Australia Assists program, ensuring high-quality deliverables that support program effectiveness and strategic decision-making. This role will co-lead the design and application of culturally informed approaches, methodologies, tools, operational research, complex evaluations, reviews and designs, and will present findings to stakeholders in a clear and impactful manner. In partnership with the current part-time MEL Manager, reporting to the Partnerships Lead, this role will provide efficient, high-quality MEL support across all program activities, working closely with globally distributed teams.
Key responsibilities
Develop, refine, and implement robust MEL systems and methodologies.
Drive continuous improvement in MEL practices and integrate innovative approaches to enhance strategic decision-making, effectiveness, and efficiency.
Design and lead mini research evaluations on key program approaches, activities, and outcomes.
Prepare high-quality reports and presentations for stakeholders, ensuring compliance with donor requirements.
Support robust activity designs to ensure they are based on sound program logics and lead to sustainable benefits and scalable impacts.
Build and manage stakeholder relationships, enhancing capacity and ensuring alignment with program objectives.
Selection criteria
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as social science or a related field. Postgraduate degree in Evaluation, Research Design, or related field highly desirable.
Minimum 5 years' experience in MEL roles within international development, humanitarian or public policy settings.
Proven expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies that are culturally informed and contextualised.
Demonstrated experience leading the development and application of MEL systems with high levels of autonomy.
Proven experience delivering high-quality MEL outputs, progress reports and case studies that meet the needs of key clients and stakeholders, ensuring compliance with donor requirements.
Demonstrated ability to manage datasets and analyse data
Demonstrated ability to produce succinct reports on key findings of data analysis, lessons learnt, and recommended next steps based on evidence
Good understanding of cross-cutting priorities such as GEDSI, Climate Change, and localisation, and the ability to integrate these priorities into program planning and implementation.
