**About the role**
As a Construction Underwriter, you are a key member of the Infrastructure and Energy Practice team working within the Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions Division. You will use your understanding relevant industry experience to provide specialist advice and exercise sound judgement regarding the provision of effective products and service solutions across the Construction portfolio.
You will be at the forefront of advising and placing insurance for Victoria's major infrastructure plans, known as the Big Build, as well as other major project activity across our State, including rail, roads, hospitals, schools, and other government infrastructure. This role will report to the Head of Infrastructure and Energy Practice.
**Key responsibilities**
- Provide expert advice and underwriting solutions for complex and large-scale construction projects across Victoria, including rail, roads, hospitals, schools, and other government infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain specialised knowledge in construction insurance, staying updated on market trends and legal developments.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure optimal risk transfer models and maintain strong relationships with reinsurance brokers to secure cost-effective solutions.
- Engage with leaders and other team members in the Infrastructure and Energy Practice team to shape the insurance strategy strategically and proactively for our clients.
- Work with other team members with shared responsible for a portfolio of clients involved in building the State's infrastructure and will attend client meetings as requested to provide accurate and timely advice.
- Lead as required, the delivery of strategy and programs for our clients including the State's major infrastructure projects.
**Who you work with**
- Delegations - As per the VMIA Instrument of Delegation.
- VMIA Clients: Provide timely advice and support to meet their unique needs while protecting the insurance program.
- Construction Team: Collaborate to develop and improve construction insurance solutions.
- Pricing and Capital Management: Work together to set premiums and develop pricing strategies for major projects.
- Claims Team: Ensure fair and reasonable claim settlements and agree on reporting procedures.
- Finance: Ensure accurate premium accounting to support VMIA's financial management.
- Risk, Insurance, and Claims Services Division: Collaborate with colleagues across the division.
- Insurance Service Providers: Consult with brokers, underwriters, and reinsurers to optimise product coverage and maintain market knowledge.
**What we are looking for**
- Minimum 5 years of experience in insurance underwriting or broking.
- Strong understanding of commercial insurance products and reinsurance markets.
- Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
- A sound working knowledge of the reinsurance market, including program structures and how to achieve value for money outcomes.
- Have a professional service approach, with demonstrated commercial acumen and skills in data and business analysis.
**Qualifications**
- You hold or are working towards tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or Insurance professional qualifications is highly desirable.
- You hold membership with ANZIIF, or equivalent body is highly desirable.
- You are governed by the fit and proper person as per APRA guidelines, i.e. not listed on the disqualified persons register (Insurance ACT section 25(A) 1) and is not convicted of a criminal offence or bankrupt.
