Overview
Location: Fitzroy, Melbourne. This is a full-time maternity leave position until 28/08/2026, funded under the Department of Health. The role blends two components to improve capacity to respond to alcohol and other drug (AOD) presentations in the Emergency Department (ED) and to coordinate AOD-related services across the hospital, with additional SSDTA coordination requirements.
About The Role
This DoAM Nurse Practitioner (NP) role is based within the Emergency Dept on weekends and in DoAM outpatients the other three days. It includes collaboration with the Complex Care: Psychosocial Team (ALERT) in the ED and with the DoAM CL team, and will connect to the ED Mental Health & AOD Hub.
Extend the provision of specialist AOD coverage in ED and DoAM Consultation and Liaison services located throughout the hospital.
Improve linkages across SVHM departments providing services to clients with AOD issues.
Implement the AOD screening tool in ED.
Facilitate referrals to appropriate community-based services.
Provide AOD education and training within the emergency department.
Coordinate access to and follow-up for SSDTA clients during their residential withdrawal stay (in collaboration with SSDTA processes).
Classifications
range from NO1 – NO2.
Your Contribution
A qualification in or equivalent and relevant registration/experience:
Nurse Practitioner – APHRA endorsed with registration meeting the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1 or 3). Minimum 5 years clinical experience, preferably in AOD or related sector.
Experience in Addiction Medicine and/or related fields.
Working knowledge of the SSDTA and the Victorian AOD service sector.
Work closely with the Access and Engagement Coordinator at Depaul House Residential Withdrawal unit to ensure SSDTA clients are supported during withdrawal stays.
Current national criminal history check, or willingness to obtain.

About The Department Of Addiction Medicine (DoAM)
The Department of Addiction Medicine at St. Vincent's (including De Paul House withdrawal unit) is a leading center for medical treatment of drug or alcohol addiction, with activities spanning direct patient treatment, research, education/training and policy development. The multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, social workers and specialist counsellors; services cover acute withdrawal and long-term management using state-of-the-art methods.
This NP role is based in the ED on weekends and in DoAM outpatient settings for the other three days, with strong collaboration to Complex Care: Psychosocial Team (ALERT) and ED AOD Hub & DoAM CL team.
