**Who is the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator?**

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as a national entity responsible for
regulating all vehicles in Australia over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. Located in Brisbane, the NHVR minimises the
compliance burden on the heavy vehicle transport industry, reduces duplication and inconsistencies across state and
territory borders, and ultimately for the heavy vehicle business with government in Australia.

Position Description | Manager Data Engineering

The NHVR is serious about investing in data science and analytics to drive better safety and productivity outcomes for the
heavy vehicle industry. What sets the function apart from other organisations is that the work is more than just theory. It
is used in real world environments to reduce fatalities and serious injury on our roads. The team is a multidisciplinary
team that leverages a broad range of strengths and experience across the team and collaborates effectively with our

modern and flexible technology stack to manage big data experiments and processes in real time.

**Primary Objective**

Lead and manage a team of data engineers in the design, build, support and maintenance of NHVR's data environments
processes, assess new and existing data sources on their applicability in NHVR's data holdings while providing authority
insights on trends, risk and issues. Lead and manage best practice data governance processes and standards to protect
and manage NHVR's information assets.***

**Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities**

The Manager Data Engineering will be hands-on and lead a data engineering team to:

- Architect, design, implement and manage a highly scalable data platform that will support real time data processing,

run complex algorithms and machine learning experiments, and enable timely access to actionable business insights
- Increase automation and scaling of complex data sets based on the customer's analytic use case, such as structured

data delivery for business analysis, daily extraction of mission enabling data for data mining/exploration, and
transforming data for applied intelligence to power impactful data visualizations
- Manage the acquisition, collection, storage (including archiving), processing and transformation of large data sets

from numerous disparate data sources, inclusive of APIs, logs, relational and non-relational databases through an
efficient and cost-effective platform
- Implement good data traceability and exceptional governance practices and processes across the business unit and

the business at large
- Build data pipelines and models that support business user self service, PowerBI and QGIS report development and

analysis
- Continually improve the business's data platforms through observations and well-researched knowledge; and

keeping track of industry best practices and trends
- Analyse budgetary impacts or estimated costs associated with platform roadmaps and key initiatives. Analyse total

cost of ownership; or total cost of transitional expenditure impacts for both the NHVR as applicab
