Paralegal

**How will I help?**

Your role as a paralegal in the Subpoenas Team will be to provide guidance and assistance to other teams as required (including responding to requests for information), take receipt of Court orders and documents that are served on Westpac's registered office and ensure they are passed on to the appropriate teams. You will also provide support to lawyers in the broader legal function.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Review and respond in a timely manner to subpoenas, notices of non-party production and discovery orders served on Westpac Banking Corporation for all bank brands, including St George, BankSA, Westpac and Bank of Melbourne.
- Engage with business stakeholders to collate responsive materials and provide guidance on scoping issues.
- Critically analyse responsive materials for privilege or legal risk, including legal professional privilege and commercially sensitive information.
- Negotiate scope of subpoenas and notices of non-party production with the solicitors of issuing parties.
- Produce materials to the courts in accordance with the relevant court rules.
- Engage with external law firms on behalf of the business to respond to complex subpoenas.
- Provide general paralegal support to lawyers within the Legal and Secretariat function, including collating materials from the business.
- General administrative tasks relating to Westpac's registered office and subpoenas.
- Take receipt of court documents served on Westpac's registered office and ensure those documents are delivered to the appropriate team for a response.
- Identify and escalate existing and emerging legal risks and issues to the Practice Leader of the Subpoenas Team. Take reasonable steps to prevent the occurrence of risk incidents or, if an incident does occur, identify it and ensure that it is managed, escalated and resolved appropriately.

**What do I need?**

As well as excellent communication, interpersonal skills and attention to detail, you will require the following skills and experience:

- Good understanding of financial services, the Group's privacy and data security obligations and legal professional privilege.
- Ability to critically review court documents including orders, provide guidance about scoping issues and escalate matters that give rise to questions of privilege, commercial in confidence or privacy.
- Ability to collaborate with business stakeholders and other lawyers within the Legal and Secretariat function. Capable of managing a number of matters and deadlines, and closing matters out in a timely and efficient manner.
