OverviewReporting to the Tailings Manager, the Principal Tailings Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic oversight for the safe, compliant, and effective operation and construction of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) at the Hidden Valley operation.
This role ensures that engineering practices align with company standards, industry best practice (including ANCOLD, GISTM, CDA), and applicable regulatory requirements.ResponsibilitiesProviding leadership and technical oversight across tailings engineering, construction, and surveillance activities.Coordinating the development and implementation of construction scopes, engineering designs, and execution plans.Liaising with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE), Engineer of Record (EoR), consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure design intent is achieved.Monitoring performance of TSFs through regular inspections, instrumentation reviews, and risk assessments.Leading the implementation of QA/QC procedures and ensure construction is executed to design specifications.Ensuring compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and geotechnical standards and procedures.Supporting the development and mentoring of junior engineers and site technical personnel.Maintaining technical documentation, including design records, change controls, inspection reports, and risk registers.Providing input into tailings governance processes, including ANCOLD conformance and audit preparedness.Contributing to ongoing improvement of tailings management practices and operational efficiency.About YouYou must be a highly experienced professional who is self-motivated and able to work efficiently and collaboratively in a team environment holding the following qualifications and experience:Relevant tertiary qualification (Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Mining Engineering)Experience in mining planning softwareWide range of experience in technical and engineering aspects of mine design and operationPlanning, analytical and problem-solving skillsStrong leadership skillsStrong written and oral communication skillsStrong coaching and mentoring skillsBenefitsThe opportunity to work for an international mining company with a diverse workforceWork for a company who values their employees and recognises their contributionExcellent safety recordCorporate / discounted rates with Medibank and Qantas ClubAccess to Harmony's benefits discounts schemeThe successful applicant must be able to meet the requirements for a PNG Work Permit application and a Federal Police Clearance.
