Overview
Director, Natural Climate Solutions Policy role at Conservation International. The Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) Policy Director will implement long-term public policy and government engagement strategies, programs, and initiatives to support CI's policy goals. Focus will be on influencing the design of international and domestic climate policy frameworks – including but not limited to carbon market, jurisdictional REDD+, and nesting policies.
Position preferably based in Singapore. Other locations: Japan (remote) or Australia (remote). The Director will be part of the Center for Policy and Incentives (CPI) team, leading CI's engagement in international policy arenas and working with CI country programs to implement key policies at the national level.
They will work closely with CPI and collaborate with the Moore Center for Science and Solutions, Center for Oceans, Nature Finance Group and country programs to formulate and champion innovative strategies, programs, and initiatives that engage key governments and stakeholders to inform and influence policy.
Responsibilities
Working in close coordination with CPI colleagues and with inputs from other CI teams, implement strategies to advance CI policy priorities. Specifically, develop policy recommendations and implement strategies to influence the design of NCS policy frameworks in priority countries globally and in the region to facilitate demand for and delivery of carbon credits from natural climate solutions, with focus on policies related to REDD+ nesting, Jurisdictional REDD+, carbon rights, national authorization processes for participating in carbon markets (Article 6, CORSIA, compliance vs VCM rules) and domestic market design.
Support the development of policy-related training and materials and deliver training on REDD+ and NCS policy enabling conditions.
Advise private sector partners on NCS policy matters as needed.
Serve as a liaison between CPI and CI teams in the region working on other policy matters including oceans and biodiversity.
Collaborate with teams to formulate and champion innovative strategies, programs, and initiatives engaging governments, NGOs, UN bodies, aid agencies, development banks, philanthropies, and corporate partners to inform and influence policy.
Working conditions
Significant travel in Asia region and beyond (at least 30%).
Hybrid work structure with a mix of in-office and remote work; guidance provided during the interview process.
Local contract with pay scale; applicants must hold a valid work permit for the country of employment.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in public policy, international affairs, conservation science, or a development-related field.
7+ years of direct experience in developing and managing non-profit public policy initiatives in the climate space, ideally REDD+, nesting, and carbon market policies.
Established relationships in the climate change policy community.
Strong understanding of policy engagement environments and strategies to influence policy processes.
Proven ability to build partnerships with external partners and stakeholders in governments, bilateral and multilateral institutions, development organizations, and NGOs.
Strong organizational, project management, and prioritization skills; ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple activities.
Ability to work independently and in teams in a fast-paced environment, including remote teams; experienced in high-level meetings, panels, conferences, workshops, events, and presentations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
Fluency in a second language is beneficial (Japanese, Khmer, Spanish, French, Portuguese).
