Fixed term fulltime position for 18 months.
We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the Prescott Environmental Luminescence Laboratory (PELL).
The Prescott Environmental Luminescence Laboratory is an established research group operating within the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS).
It has attracted significant funding over the past 10 years for projects focused on the uses of Novel Fluorescence (NF) quantum material sensing for identifying and differentiating minerals and materials relevant to industry, environment, and public health.
Working in a growing research and development team with a high degree of autonomy, the Data Scientist will work closely with physicists and engineers to transform raw imaging and spectral data into meaningful, actionable insights.
The role focuses on developing and optimising data pipelines, applying advanced statistical and machine learning methods, and ensuring reproducibility and scalability of analysis routines.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working at the intersection of experimental science and computational analytics, and who is motivated by applying cutting-edge data techniques to real-world sensing challenges.
We will tailor the role to your strengths, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as software, electronics, or mechanical design depending on your experience, and this role is a fantastic opportunity to apply your skills to solving real-world problems.
To be successful you will need: Demonstrated experience in Python for data analysis, including scientific libraries such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, and matplotlib.
Experience working with spectral and/or imaging datasets, including multivariate statistical techniques (e.g. PLS, PCA, k-fold validation).
Ability to interpret scientific problems and translate them into reproducible, data-driven workflows and analytical models.
Familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git) for collaborative development and reproducible code management.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams across research and/or technical domains.
Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
