**About the team**:
The **Legal Metrology Branch** administers Australia's measurement legislation, ensuring a level playing field for:

- consumers
- businesses
- government entities and
- international trade.

The **Measurement Law Reform** (MLR) **Section** is reforming the current legislative framework underpinning Australia's national measurement system to modernise, streamline and simplify it. Australia's measurement system is linked to formal and internationally-agreed standards which ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurements used in everyday life.

Implementing the reforms seeks to ensure Australia has a strong, efficient and effective measurement system that:

- facilitates trade
- supports ongoing economic prosperity
- builds business and consumer confidence, and
- meets safety and security objectives.

One permanent opportunity is available, focussed on developing the new measurement legislation.

You will:

- Be able to effectively contribute to a legislative drafting project to implement the government's preferred reforms under the Measurement Law Review. This includes the ability to quickly develop an understanding of the current legislation and the reforms.
- Have a demonstrated ability to manage projects and work collaboratively with technical experts.
- Understand the statutory, regulatory and policy frameworks relevant to legal metrology or have the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- Be able to grapple with complex policy issues and provide comprehensive and authoritative advice on them.
- Have the ability to prepare high level policy advice to implement risk and principles-based technical policy in new and existing areas.
- Have demonstrated communication and stakeholder management skills, as well as an ability to balance competing priorities, think critically and demonstrate sound decision making.
- Have well-developed leadership and managerial capabilities.
- Demonstrate the NMI's core values across everything you do and support others to do the same.

**What you will do**:
As an **Assistant Manager, Measurement Law Development**, you will lead various work packages needed to implement the government's preferred reform option under the Measurement Law Review. This role will primarily focus on developing the new legislation, and will involve policy analysis, working with technical policy staff, preparing drafting instructions, and instructing the Office of Parliamentary Counsel. This role will support stakeholder engagement activities as needed. There is currently 1 permanent ongoing role available.

This role will:

- Coordinate and undertake other detailed or sensitive projects that impact on the strategic, political or operational outcomes of NMI.
- Manage and develop well-researched policy and complex policy advice that aligns with the agency's strategic objectives for various internal and external decision-making bodies.
