The General Surgeon will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the general surgery service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), primarily servicing the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital.

The General Surgeon is responsible for the provision of specialist general surgery services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients at the relevant Hospital.

The General Surgeon will ensure provision of high quality general surgery services to all patients within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, predominantly the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital.

Scope of Clinical Practice may be varied to include District Scope of Clinical Practice as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services and as approved by the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).

The General Surgeon will proactively:

- Support the development of general surgery services
- Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
- Support and develop general surgery research within the department

The expectation of a Zero Hour Reliever is to assist with planned leave coverage and roster gaps as they arise. There is no ability to build a waitlist.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has responsibility for health services in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region - a catchment area extending along the coastline from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south with over 400,000 residents. This catchment covers four Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven. ISLHD operates eight hospital sites in Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Berry, Shoalhaven and Milton Ulladulla, and community health services operating from approximately 58 locations across the region. ISLHD is one of the region's largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 staff.

**About the hospital**

Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital is a busy acute care facility with 211 beds, which provides emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services to around 22,000 patients each year. The hospital has an Intensive Care Unit that incorporates High Dependency and Coronary Care beds and also provides Emergency Department services. As well as these clinical services, the hospital has a busy Obstetric Unit, and also provides services for children under 16 years of age.

Shoalhaven Hospital is affiliated with the University of Wollongong and supports the training of Nursing, Medical and Allied Health staff. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
