**About the role**

Applications are invited for suitably qualified and enthusiastic medical practitioner to join our team as an Upper GI & HPB Surgery Fellow for the 2026 Clinical Year (commencing February 2026).

The role of the UGIG Fellow is to have a committed interest in Upper GI / HPB Surgery, either as a specialist in the field or to increase knowledge in the field for general surgical practice. The Fellow will have an opportunity to gain experience in a large volume of complex oesophagogastric and hepatopancreaticobiliary operations for both benign and malignant disease.

The Fellow is expected to provide clinical management of unit patients and referrals, including attendance at operating theatre sessions and outpatient clinics. It is also a requirement that the successful applicant will undertake administrative duties for the Unit under the supervision and direction of the Head of Unit or Consultant. The position is based at Footscray Hospital, and includes a strong focus on emergency surgery.

**About the Unit**

The Upper GI/HPB and General Surgery (UGIG) Unit is part of the Division of Surgery based at Western Health, Footscray. Western Health is a major tertiary centre in Western Melbourne and part of a health network with a catchment population of 900,000 in one of the fastest growth corridors in Victoria. The unit is a combined hepatopancreaticobiliary/oesophagogastric service. The unit comprises eight Upper GI/HPB consultant surgeons, 2 registrars, 2 HMOs and 4 interns. The fellow will be involved in between 200-300 major operative cases.

**About you**:

- Hold a Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Have current registration with AHPRA as a medical practitioner
- Passed the exam and satisfied all other criteria to be a full FRACS. A history of previous work experience at Western Health is desirable but not compulsory. A previous year as a surgical fellow is desirable but not compulsory.
