About Us The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly committed $9 billion—an 80:20 funding arrangement—for the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program (BHTSP), marking the largest single investment in the highway to date.
This initiative aims to reduce crash severity and frequency, particularly between Gympie and Cairns, through measures such as wide centre line treatments, audio tactile line marking, intersection upgrades, rest areas, pavement strengthening, overtaking lanes and upgrades to narrow structures, with completion targeted by 2030.
It builds on over $6 billion in planned investment under the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) to .
Project prioritisation will be guided by the Bruce Highway Advisory Council and both levels of government, with a corridor-wide fatigue management strategy informing rest area and stopping place upgrades.
