Overview
Senior Sustainability Consultant | NSW at Arup.
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
The Sustainability portfolio encompasses a wide range of dynamic infrastructure projects, supporting clients across rail, road, water and energy.
Sustainability is a core strategic goal at Arup, with our mission dedicated to fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for humanity, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole.
We provide advice, design, and planning support to major clients globally, and our growing Climate and Sustainability services team is seeking a candidate to support a wide range of projects as we help clients achieve their sustainability goals.
Our team is constantly pushing to broaden our expertise and stay ahead in sustainable development.
You'll be supported to explore the evolution of the field, pursue your interests, and stay across emerging trends.
As a Senior Sustainability Consultant, you'll lead sustainability workstreams on major infrastructure projects across Australia.
Working closely with engineers, designers, and project managers, you'll help shape integrated, future focused solutions.
To succeed in this role, you'll need deep expertise and the confidence to work independently and think creatively.
You'll bring a strong track record of leading and delivering sustainability assessments, a clear understanding of how design drives sustainable outcomes, and familiarity with infrastructure lifecycles, including experience in preparing Design and/or AS-Built ratings.
Proficiency in the IS Rating Scheme is essential, though we'll also consider experience with other recognised frameworks such as BREEAM Infrastructure, ENVISION or GreenRoads.
Responsibilities
Champion innovative approaches to sustainable design, construction, and operations, with a focus on how emerging technologies can lift performance.
Work alongside designers to challenge conventions and embed cutting-edge practices.
Produce clear, well-researched reports and technical papers on a wide range of sustainability topics.
Use data driven analysis to ensure accuracy and credibility, drawing on input from subject matter experts.
You'll also play a key role in presenting findings to stakeholders and shaping next steps.
Partner with clients and project teams to embed advanced sustainability strategies into infrastructure projects - driving performance across areas such as carbon, circular economy, nature-based solutions, and social value.
Take ownership of conducting sustainability assessments and detailed life cycle analyses.
Train and inspire junior sustainability team members and build the capability of a broad range of staff.
Qualifications and Experience
Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in engineering, environmental science or similar area.
Extensive experience (ideally 10+ years) in sustainability within infrastructure or transport sectors.
Proven experience as the principal sustainability lead in the delivery of IS Ratings and/or equivalent infrastructure sustainability certification schemes.
Proven ability to manage whole-of-life cost assessments, carbon footprint analysis, and climate risk assessments.
Apply a detailed and empirically rigorous approach to sustainability with a capacity to develop clear, implementable solutions for clients and projects.
Demonstrated ability to contribute constructively in cross-functional teams, valuing diverse perspectives and building respectful relationships to achieve goals.
Mature negotiation and communication skills with diverse internal and external stakeholders, with an appreciation for commercial and quality parameters.
