**DISABILITY SUPPORT WORKER (CASUAL)**
The Disability Support Worker (DSW) plays a vital role in providing assistance and support to individuals with disabilities, aiding them in achieving greater independence and engagement within their communities. The responsibilities of a disability support worker encompass a range of essential duties:
**1. Providing Personal Care**: DSWs offer personal care services to individuals with disabilities, which may involve assisting with toileting, showering, dressing, grooming, and aiding in mobility and transfers, often employing specialised equipment and providing support during physical therapy exercises.
**2. Assisting with Daily Living Tasks**: These workers help individuals with disabilities carry out daily living tasks such as meal preparation, house cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping.
**3. Supporting Social and Recreational Activities**: DSWs enable clients to participate in social and recreational activities, such as going to the movies, attending events, engaging in sports or hobbies, and accompanying clients to medical appointments or other outings while providing necessary assistance.
**4. Providing Transportation**: DSWs facilitate transportation for individuals with disabilities, including driving them to appointments or offering guidance on using public transportation.
**5. Providing Health-Related Support**: DSWs assist clients in managing their health, which includes monitoring health conditions and providing basic medical care.
**6. Providing Emotional Support**: Emotional support is a crucial aspect of the role, involving active listening to clients' concerns and fostering a safe and supportive environment. DSWs also work in accordance with positive behavior support plans developed for clients by behavior specialists.
**7. Supporting Independent Living**: Training and support are provided to help clients develop independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, and financial management.
**8. Administering Medication**: DSWs may be responsible for administering medication or assisting clients in managing their medication following established procedures and client rights policies, including privacy and confidentiality.
**9. Maintaining Documentation**: Accurate and comprehensive records are maintained, including daily logs, health records, and incident reports.
**10. Monitoring and Reporting**: DSWs may monitor clients' health and report any changes or concerns to healthcare professionals, ensuring appropriate documentation is completed.
**11. Collaborating with other Professionals**: Close collaboration with healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and therapists, is essential to ensure the best care for clients. DSWs may also participate in support planning and reviews for individual clients and monitor outcomes.
**12. Training & Development**: Active participation in a team environment through open communication, engagement in staff meetings, planning processes, and policy review is expected. Performance Development meetings help identify ongoing training and support opportunities.
**13. Ensuring Safety**: DSWs are responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals with disabilities, identifying and addressing potential safety hazards, and responding to emergencies, and reporting any quality and safety incidents or workplace hazards.
**14. Supporting Education and Employment**: Assistance is provided to individuals with disabilities in pursuing educational and employment opportunities, including helping them develop resumes, find job openings, and participate in job interviews.
**Qualifications**:
- Certificate III in Individual Support
- Certificate IV in Disability
- Certificate IV in Aged Care
