Primary objective
The Policy Officer is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing and evaluating specific youth projects in consultation with
the Manager; and to provide a conduit between young people, the youth sector and the Northern Territory Government. In addition to
developing linkages with young people and youth service providers, the Policy Officer also undertakes a range of research activities which
contribute to the development of youth related policies and initiatives in the Northern Territory and supports the administration of grants.
Context statement
The Policy Officer role works extensively with stakeholders, including young people to plan and coordinate all aspects and achieve the
best outcomes of youth programs such as the Northern Territory Youth Round Table, the Northern Territory Youth Week and the School
Holiday Activities Calendars. The suitable applicant will be required to work flexible hours, including weekends.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage and coordinate all aspects of youth programs, including financial management of the program and facilitation of weekend and
virtual meetings.
- Prepare high level reports and correspondence including Ministerial and Legislative Assembly Briefings, Cabinet Submissions, speech
notes and media releases.
3. Investigate national and international trends and initiatives in youth issues and provide advice regarding the feasibility of adapting
these initiatives to the Territory context.
4. Foster collaborative relationships across Government, the private sector and the community in advancing the priorities of young
Territorians.
5. Assist with the administration of grants through the Grants NT system and contribute to and support other functions and projects
undertaken by the Office of Youth Affairs as needed.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in project management, financial management, and facilitation of meetings.
2. Proven experience in research and analysis and in presenting detailed and complex information in plain English.
3. Demonstrated skills and experience in preparing high level reports and correspondence, including Ministerial and Legislative Assembly
briefings, Cabinet submissions, annual reports or similar and research reports.
4. Experience in fostering networks and building partnerships with key stakeholders, particularly the ability to work with and develop
relationships with young people.
5. Ability to apply an understanding and commitment to the principles and practices of community engagement.
6. High level of motivation and the ability to work under pressure with changing priorities and deadlines.
7. High level of communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively work and interact with people from diverse
cultures, backgrounds and community groups.
8. Demonstrated working experience in social media marketing and communications.
9. Knowledge of NT Government procurement and grants processes and the ability to use Grants NT system or similar.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of NT Public Sector financial management, and budget and procurement principles, practices and procedures or similar.
- NT Driver's licence or ability to obtain.
