Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation currently seeking to fill the following vacancy within our Child, Youth and Family Support Services division.  The Kalwun Child, Youth and Family Support Services division administers the Family Wellbeing Service, Family Participation Program, Early Learning Program and the Kinship and Foster Care programs within the South East Qld region.

About the Role

The Assessment Officer is responsible for providing culturally safe, competency-based assessments for all Kalwun Kinship and Foster Care households. As a key part of this role the Assessment Officer will be responsible for conducting carer assessments which is the process of gathering evidence into a report to decide if carer applicants will be suitable foster carers, including  initial and renewal foster and kinship care assessments. This position is full time, Monday to Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm, and based at Burleigh.

Position Duties

  • Actively work to ensure that culturally responsible practice is embedded in all compliance and assessment processes.
  • Build systems that provide prompt and informed responses to carer enquiries and effective processing of carer applications.
  • Ensure all required compliance and probity checks are completed for all carer applicants.
  • Encourage service users, carers and other agencies to provide feedback.
  • Conduct thorough screenings, reports, and assessments, ensuring potential kinsip & foster care applicants meet the legislated Standards of care
  • Deliver timely, accurate and complete household safety assessments, in accordance with contract guidelines and company policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in training and professional development activities to develop competencies to ensure that service delivery is of high quality and consistent with current agency and department requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements including all state and federal laws.
  • Work in alignment with Kalwun's vision, values and strategic plan.
  • Undertake any other directive from the Kinship and Foster Care Manager and General Manager.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Sound level knowledge of child development and an understanding of developmental milestones.
  2. Understanding & knowledge of child abuse/neglect and knowledge of issues affecting families involved within the child protection system.
  3. High level of communication skills- written, verbal and interpersonal.
  4. Able to handle multiple tasks; a self-starter who is energetic and detail-oriented with excellent organisational skills
  5. Experience in a similar role an advantage
  6. A qualification at a minimum Diploma level in Children's Services, Psychology, Social Science, Education or similar, and experience in Child Protection

  • A Blue Card for working with children is a mandatory requirement. The 'No Card No Start' law applies to this position - a Blue Card must be obtained prior to commencement.
  • As this is a risk-assessed role under the Child Protection Act 1999, the successful applicant will be required to obtain a LCS2 clearance withing 3 months of commencing employment.
