Provisional Psychologist (Paid Internship)

Job Type: Casual/ Internship

Contract length: 12 months

Work Location: In person

The Provisional Psychologist provides psychological services under the supervision of an AHPRA-approved supervisor in a private practice setting. The role includes assessment, intervention, and client support, while also contributing to the daily operations of the practice, including administration, marketing, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Conduct client intake, assessments, and formulation under supervision.
  • Deliver evidence-based interventions for individuals, couples, or families.
  • Develop treatment plans and progress reports for clients and referrers.
  • Maintain accurate, ethical, and confidential clinical notes.
  • Participate in individual and group supervision, applying feedback to practice.
  • Assist with psychoeducation programs, group sessions, or workshops where required.
  • Provide psycho-education and resources to clients.
  • Uphold ethical standards and comply with AHPRA, APS, and organisational policies.

Administration

  • Manage client bookings, cancellations, and follow-ups as required.
  • Support billing processes, Medicare/NDIS claims, and payment administration.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance documentation (consent forms, risk assessments, referral reports).
  • Contribute to the smooth daily running of the practice, including reception duties when necessary.

Marketing & Practice Growth

  • Support the development of promotional materials (e.g., blogs, social media posts, flyers).
  • Contribute ideas for community engagement and referral networking (e.g., liaising with GPs, schools, and community groups).
  • Participate in practice events, workshops, or webinars to promote services.
  • Uphold the practice's brand, values, and client-centred reputation in all interactions.

Professional Development

  • Engage in reflective practice and learning consistent with AHPRA requirements.
  • Attend internal/external PD activities as approved.
  • Work towards competencies required for general registration as a psychologist.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Current registration as a Provisional Psychologist with AHPRA.
  • Completion (or near completion) of a fifth-year or higher degree in psychology.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice for a range of presenting issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
  • Ability to manage time, balance caseloads, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Willingness to engage in administrative and business development tasks.
  • Interest in marketing, social media, and community networking.
  • Commitment to ethical, client-focused, and culturally sensitive practice.

Supervision & Support

  • Regular supervision from a Board-approved supervisor.
  • Opportunities for co-facilitating groups, shadowing sessions, and learning private practice systems.
  • Access to professional development resources and networking opportunities.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Completion of a 4-year APAC-accredited psychology sequence.
  • Current registration (or eligibility) as a Provisional Psychologist with AHPRA.
  • Professional indemnity and public liability insurance (or willingness to obtain).
  • Current Working With Children Check and National Police Check.
  • Commitment to ongoing supervision and professional development.

Desirable

  • Experience working with children, adolescents, or families.
  • Familiarity with practice management systems (e.g., Halaxy, Power Diary).
  • Interest in community mental health, wellbeing programs, or school-based interventions.

Pay: From $83,000.00 per year
