THE ROLE

Reporting to the Principal Counsel, the Legal Counsel delivers high-quality legal advice concerning the operational needs of the Social Services Regulator (SSR), established under the Social Services Regulations Act 2021 (Vic) (Act), which supports all facets of the Social Services regulator scheme (Scheme). This role aids the Legal Services team in ensuring the Scheme is administered in accordance with all relevant legislation, as well as the values of the Victorian public sector and the Scheme.

The position involves providing legal services to SSR staff, managers, executives, and the SSR Consultative Committee to facilitate their functions. It offers opportunities to work closely with regulatory teams and places a strong emphasis on organisational improvement and collaboration.

ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE

  • Provide strategic, risk-based legal advice on social service regulation and laws, and legal matters related to the SSR's functions, including complaints, notifications, investigations; and a broad range of administrative law, legislative interpretation, and corporate governance matters connected to the operation of the SSR and related issues.
  • Collaborate closely with policy and operational teams to assist in the translation of legal advice and statutory interpretation into operational policy.
  • Offer reliable legal guidance to support day-to-day operations, including, but not limited to, public sector obligations, management of litigation and contract management.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of guidance and communication materials. This includes, but is not limited to, internal policy and procedure manuals, brochures, fact sheets, website content, online forms/applications, etc.
  • Support Legal Services in providing high-quality, stakeholder-focused, and cost-effective legal services concerning highly complex and sensitive matters.
