It is located just across from Seaford beach and a minute's walk from the station. 38 South is a modern, family-owned café and restaurant run by a local family of five. We're known for our fresh, seasonal food, specialty coffee, refreshing drinks, and a wide range of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

With seating for over 100 guests, a cozy yet vibrant interior, and a strong reputation for genuine hospitality, 38 South has quickly become a favourite among locals and visitors alike for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special celebrations.

We are now looking for a full-time chef to bring creativity, skill, and passion to our growing team at 131 Nepean Hwy, Seaford VIC 3198.

As a chef you will have a creative approach to consulting on menu design with a focus on seasonal produce, delivering honest and delicious food.

Chef Duties/Job Descriptions but Not Exhaustive:

• Plan, develop, and implement menus with a focus on seasonal, fresh produce that reflects the relaxed yet modern style of 38 South.
• Estimate food and labour costs, manage budgets, and coordinate supply orders in line with business needs.
• Supervise and maintain quality, taste, and presentation standards across all meals before service.
• Discussing food preparation issues with managers, dietitians and kitchen and waiting staff.
• Demonstrating techniques and advising on cooking procedures.
• Prepare, cook, and present a wide range of dishes, including vegan and vegetarian options, ensuring variety and consistency.
• Supervise and coordinate the work of kitchen staff, including delegation of tasks and rostering.
• Train, mentor, and develop junior chefs, cooks and kitchen hands, ensuring skills growth and alignment with the restaurant's standards.
• Explaining and enforcing hygiene regulations.
• Enforce strict compliance with food safety, hygiene, and OH&S standards.
• Selecting and training staff.
• Creating a vision for the cuisine, inspiring your team and delegating tasks effectively.
• Recruiting, motivating and managing staff.
• Knowledge of Food Hygiene and OH&S Standards.
• Managing freezing and preservation of food.
• Creating a vision for the cuisine, inspiring your team and delegating tasks effectively.
• Ability to work closely with management to ensure the consistent high-quality service is provided.
• Monitor stock control, food preservation, and inventory management, ensuring efficiency and minimal wastage.
• Collaborate with management to design special event menus and tailor offerings for functions and private dining.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, fostering teamwork, creativity, and a positive work culture.
• Overseeing the day-to-day running of the kitchen, ordering supply and undertaking the kitchen inventory (including budgeting).
• Overseeing hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen.
• As required in a position as chef.

Chef Skills and Experiences

• Minimum 1-year relevant work experience.
• At least Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery or Kitchen management.
• Experience with vegan and vegetarian cuisine.
• Professional presentation and a positive attitude.
• Ability to thrive in a team environment and under pressure.
