About the job
The Community Awareness Officer – Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) will play a pivotal role in enhancing access to mental health services for young people from migrant, refugee, and ethnic minority backgrounds. This role is dedicated to addressing the unique cultural, linguistic, and systemic barriers that can prevent these communities from seeking and receiving appropriate mental health support.
Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager you will:
- Program delivery & community engagement – Develop, deliver, and evaluate programs and workshops to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and support CALD young people and their families.
- Youth and community consultation – Work with the Youth Advisory Group, schools, and cultural-specific services to ensure programs reflect CALD youth voices and needs.
- Outreach & visibility – Lead outreach activities, attend cultural community events, and provide culturally tailored information to support access to mental health services.
- Stakeholder & partnership development – Build and sustain relationships with schools, CALD organisations, community groups, and agencies to enhance referral pathways, collaboration, and cultural responsiveness.
- Promotion & other duties – Support online and social media presence for CALD engagement and undertake other activities as directed by the Clinical Services Manager.
Skills and experience
The following criteria must be met for consideration for this position:
- Tertiary qualifications in the social or health sciences, community development or a related field, and/or substantial relevant experience in a similar field.
- Deep understanding of cultural diversity and the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with people from migrant, refugee, and ethnic minority backgrounds.
- Strong understanding of cultural diversity, youth mental health, and the challenges faced by CALD young people.
- Experience in developing, delivering, and evaluating community engagement programs, workshops, and awareness initiatives.
- Proven ability to build partnerships and collaborate with schools, community organisations, and service providers to achieve shared outcomes.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse audiences.
