Harmony is the largest gold producer by volume in South Africa and is a significant operator of gold tailings retreatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, Harmony owns and operates the Hidden Valley mine and owns 50% of the Tier 1 Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project. In Australia, Harmony owns the high-grade CSA copper mine in Cobar, NSW and is currently preparing to progress the Execution Phase of the Eva Copper Mine Project in QLD. These assets are supported by the Harmony Australasia regional corporate office located in Milton, Brisbane.

This role will be offered as a FIFO opportunity from/to Australia working on a 16/12-day roster.

Reporting to the Mining Principal - Technical Services, and with a team of 8 people, the Geotechnical Superintendent role is one of collaboration and support. The use and implementation of best practice in geotechnical engineering, combined with the application of Harmony's geotechnical plans and procedures and relevant Mining Resource Authority regulatory obligations will deliver value to the site This role ensures geotechnical inspections are completed that will complement and shape ground control strategies and manage geotechnical projects from concept to completion giving the role clarity and purpose.

Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Oversees ground investigations in line with Harmony's ground control management plan.
  • They ensure geotechnical designs comply with safety and engineering standards while managing site conditions like soil and ground stability and groundwater.
  • Coordinates with mine planning engineers, contractors, and regulatory bodies to mitigate geological risks.
  • They will scope, supervise drilling, sampling, and testing operations to maintain process integrity and safety.
  • Provide effective leadership to their direct reports and instils sound team management skills within their section.
  • They will ensure safety and stability factors are met that satisfy appropriate factors of safety and maintain risk management criteria in demonstrating risk identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation and treatment of that risk.
  • Complete geotechnical investigation and analysis reports
  • Design and implement ground support controls where practicable to do so.
  • Complete monitoring and risk mitigation work at Hidden Valley. This is ensuring technology Harmony utilizes to monitor and treat risk is applied to maintain geotechnical risks to as low as is reasonably practicable.
  • Maintain compliance and quality control of geotechnical systems and processes. Keeping relevant documents up to date. Scheduling and completing audits, reporting on the findings of these audit's and devising ways to improve processes.
  • Creates scopes of work for geotechnical works.
  • Approves completed scopes of works.
  • Communicates and aligns with offsite personnel regarding geotechnical risk, risk management and strategies.
  • Develop and set drill and blast section key performance indicators.

About You:

You must be an experienced professional who is self-motivated and able to work efficiently and collaboratively in a team environment holding the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related science.
  • Experienced in the management and supervision of diamond drilling programs.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft product use, excel, word PowerPoint, project and teams.
  • Minimum 10 years industry experience with demonstrated exposure to geotechnical methods and processes.
  • Experience in leading safety initiatives, open pit geological and geotechnical mapping, design of wall pressurisation drilling programs to reduce water pressures within pit slopes.
  • Ability to plan and organise self and others, supervision and engagement skills.
  • Current drivers licence.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Experience with mine planning / technical services teams.
