About the organisation

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is Australia's oldest and most pre-eminent professional orchestra, a cornerstone of Victoria's culture, known for high-quality performances, innovation, and community engagement, reaching millions globally. The MSO fosters a culture of giving that brings together donors, corporate partners, and its creative community. As the MSO celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2026 the organisation is preparing for its next phase of growth.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Development will shape and lead the MSO's development portfolio, which encompasses philanthropy, corporate partnerships, government grants and trusts and foundations. This pivotal role will set the strategic direction for all fundraising and engagement initiatives, personally manage a portfolio of principal donors, and partner with the Leadership Team and Board to identify fundable priorities. Inspiring a small team, the appointee will realise fundraising capabilities as part of the strong vision set by the Board and CEO, collaborating with colleagues to build a shared sense of ownership and connection.

About you

You are an accomplished philanthropic leader with significant experience securing principal and major gifts in a purpose-led cultural environment. A persuasive communicator and trusted collaborator, you bring a deep understanding of philanthropic trends, stakeholder engagement, and the strategic levers that drive sustainable growth. You excel in engaging diverse stakeholders, from donors and corporate partners to the creative community. With experience leading and inspiring high-performing teams, you combine strategic insight with analytical acumen to deliver measurable results and continuing relationships.
