Our client is an industry leading consultant in the field of structure repair and durability services. Their principal areas of expertise include maximising the longevity of structural assets using innovative remedial solutions and - at the core of durability - lies their team of highly skilled consultants. They have a team of highly skilled engineers, technicians and researchers that combine their experience to preserve existing structures, ensuring new projects last a lifetime with an open management structure and employ over 30 staff across two offices in VIC and NSW.

About the Role:

Due to recent project wins and ongoing company growth, our client is seeking an experienced
Senior Materials Engineer (Remedial) / Experienced Remedial Consultant
to join their cohesive engineering team in our Sydney office, in a permanent capacity.

As a Materials Engineer and Durability Specialist, you will be tasked to inspect and report on infrastructure related matters, undertake and/or co-ordinate investigations and condition assessments, identify and design remedial options (including cathodic protection systems, protective coatings, concrete repair, and other materials), prepare durability design reports, prepare detailed scope of works and cost estimates, and managing various projects.

Your assignment scope will be varied and provide you with an opportunity to work across a wide range of business sectors including government, institutional, commercial, residential, industrial, marine, mining, universities, hospitals, schools, and mining.

Interstate and short-term travel may be required to various locations across Australia as well as to our head office in Melbourne for project requirements and training opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Core Technical Competencies

  • Materials & Durability Expertise
  • Proven capability in the investigation, analysis, and remediation of concrete, steel, and composite structures.
  • Advanced knowledge of
    corrosion mechanisms, protective coatings, cathodic protection (impressed current and galvanic systems)
    , and cementitious/epoxy repair methods.
  • Experience designing and specifying remedial strategies for civil, heritage, mining, marine, or defence infrastructure.
  • Diagnostics & Forensic Assessment
  • Skilled in
    condition assessments, failure investigations, and laboratory/non-destructive testing
    .
  • Root cause analysis to inform remedial design and extend asset life cycles.

Consultancy & Client Engagement

  • Comfortable acting as a
    technical consultant
    , engaging with clients to scope problems, design fit-for-purpose remedial solutions, and provide clear technical recommendations.
  • Strong ability to translate complex engineering findings into
    clear, actionable advice for non-technical stakeholders
    .
  • Contributes to
    business development
    by building trusted client relationships and identifying opportunities for further work.

Project Management & Delivery

  • Experience managing small-to-medium remedial engineering projects, including
    budget tracking, scheduling, contractor coordination, and reporting
    .
  • Adept at balancing
    technical delivery with stakeholder expectations
    .
  • Capable of mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing project team environment.

Qualifications & Background:

  • Bachelor's or Master's in
    Materials Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a related discipline
    (with remedial/durability focus).
  • Minimum
    5–10 years' experience
    in materials engineering, with at least 3+ years in remedial/forensic roles (materials durability, concrete remediation, or corrosion).
  • Prior exposure to
    consultancy environments
    or defence/critical infrastructure projects is advantageous.
  • Experience with: remedial design; cathodic protection system design, installation or monitoring; protective coating selection, specification, or quality assurance; durability modelling (such as concrete thermal or chloride modelling).
  • Mix of technical depth + consulting exposure
    essential (reports, defect assessments, client meetings).
  • Has delivered
    condition assessments

  • Ready to step into more responsibility: junior PM, mentoring, client ownership.
  • Motivated by variety (buildings + infrastructure) and being seen as a specialist voice in a smaller, expert team.
