In your role, you will use your knowledge and skills to understand, believe and support IDE in carrying out it's "Why". You will do this by:

  • Executing assigned mechanical system development, and other general product development and commercialisation activities, to a high degree of technical excellence, with low level of oversight, satisfying project stakeholders in support of producing commercially successful results for IDE and its Clients.
  • Supervising, leading and developing team members on projects, and improving the capability of both individual product developer team members in the mechanical engineering discipline, and IDE as a whole.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, clients and partners in product development and commercialisation teams to realise project and company goals.

We are seeking a Senior Product Developer who is a proactive, passionate team player, driven by solving complex challenges, as no day at IDE is the same. You'll be comfortable in making decisions based on accurate information, be able to apply critical thinking skills and be willing to challenge the status quo.

This role is in our Connected Care Business Unit where you will report directly to the Business Unit Director.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and improve biomedical systems, medical devices, and instruments through all stages of the product development lifecycle.
  • Apply knowledge of biomedical engineering principles, regulatory standards, and quality management systems (such as ISO to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Conduct technical research including material selection for biocompatibility, regulatory and market analysis, and intellectual property evaluations relevant to medical technologies.
  • Utilise advanced 3D CAD modeling, engineering drawing, and prototyping techniques including 3D printing to create functional medical device prototypes.
  • Execute verification testing, user evaluations, and clinical stakeholder validation to optimise device performance and usability.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to integrate engineering solutions with clinical needs and health outcomes.
  • Manage project timelines and communications to ensure research and development objectives are met efficiently.

Essential Criteria

  • A degree in one or more of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or similar applicable technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience working in mechanical engineering product development roles with some experience in the medical device or similarly regulated industries.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Medical Device Development process and Quality Management Systems ISO 13485, or, similar.
  • Demonstrated understanding of product development processes, methodologies, and practices e.g. design thinking, agile development, design controls, etc.
  • Understanding of key international standards, including but not limited to IEC 62366 Human Factors, ISO 14971 Risk Management and ISO 60601 Medical Electrical Equipment Safety A degree in one or more of the following or equivalent.
  • A foundation in mechanical and mechatronics, with intermediate expertise in mechanical design & CAD proficiency, prototyping, engineering analysis, DFMA, materials knowledge, testing & technical writing.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in developing products at various stages of the product development process as part of a cross functional team.
  • Experience in directing and reviewing outputs from technical personnel in the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Experience in leading the design of product sub-systems, and teams (two or more) of technical resources through the product development process.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word and Excel.
