About The Role
As a Financial Counsellor, you'll support a broad and diverse range of clients including those affected by family violence, mental health challenges, illness, and other complex life circumstances to navigate financial stress and build long-term financial wellbeing.

Using a trauma-informed and empowerment-based approach, you'll provide intensive support through in-depth assessments (via phone, video, or face-to-face), case work, advocacy, and tailored financial options. You'll also play a key role in triaging and referring clients to other services, working collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies to ensure holistic support.

This role is based in Hastings, with the flexibility to work from home where appropriate for client delivery. It's a highly autonomous position, ideal for someone who enjoys managing their own caseload while being part of a supportive and values-driven team.

You'll also contribute to the development of Good Shepherd's financial counselling services and broader organisational objectives, with opportunities to participate in sector development, agency events, and systemic advocacy.

This is a contracted role until June 2026, with strong potential for extension depending on funding.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Deliver high-quality financial counselling across phone, video, and face-to-face settings.
  • Use trauma-informed, culturally sensitive approaches to support clients in achieving financial stability.
  • Advocate for clients with financial institutions, service providers, and external dispute resolution agencies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external services to ensure holistic support.
  • Contribute to sector development and systemic advocacy through forums and working groups.

What We're Looking For

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling and/or experience supporting individuals in financial distress, ideally within community services or the not-for-profit sector
  • Strong financial counselling, case management and advocacy skills, with the ability to assess and provide tailored financial advice
  • Understanding of credit and debt legislation, hardship policies, consumer protection laws and financial rights
  • Ability to use case management software, Microsoft Office suite and interpret financial regulations and hardship provision
  • Membership, or eligibility for membership, with Financial Counselling Victoria (FCVic)
