Are you completing a degree in Science or Engineering and would like to gain valuable hands-on practical experience in your field? ANSTO's Year in Industry Internship program is your introduction to a career in nuclear science and technology at the home of Australia's most significant landmark and national infrastructure organisation.

Be industry-ready
The one-year program commences February 2026 and provides industry-based learning for students to apply theory and skills to the workplace and use this experience to enhance the value of their remaining study. You will get the opportunity to work with world-class, specialised scientific equipment to deliver on a range of industry and research projects.

This opportunity is ideal for students studying one or more of the following degrees:

  • Chemistry
  • Earth and environmental science
  • Physics
  • Forensic science
  • Engineering

The internship is open to penultimate year students, and participants are required to defer their final year of study to work full-time.  If selected for this opportunity you will need to provide a formal statement from your university confirming approval of your deferral of studies to participate in the program.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • experimental design and implementation
  • maintenance, calibration and operation of laboratory equipment
  • alpha, beta and gamma spectral analysis, including the maintenance, calibration, operation of associated counting instrumentation
  • radiochemical separations
  • inorganic chemistry
  • lead-210 dating of sediment
  • laboratory housekeeping
  • record keeping and data collation

ANSTO's Nuclear Stewardship division maintains national nuclear science & technology capabilities and functions that are mandated by Government, regulators or otherwise considered essential to ongoing ANSTO operations. Capabilities include radionuclide metrology, measurement and monitoring of radioactivity in the environment, low and intermediate radioanalytical chemistry and nuclear forensics.

This position will be based in the Low Level Radioanalytical Group which maintains measurement capabilities to quantify naturally occurring radionuclides and difficult to measure radionuclides through alpha, beta and gamma measurement techniques, as well as lead-210 dating of sediments.
