The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact:

As a key member of our high-performing Service Innovation & Reform team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of ALS service delivery. This position leads the design and implementation of innovative, client-centred reform projects that drive meaningful, culturally safe outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It's also a unique opportunity for someone seeking a break from legal practice to contribute to service design, delivery, and improving how we work.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and deliver strategic projects that embed holistic service models and socio-legal frameworks.
  • Develop and implement core policies that enable practice growth and support innovative service delivery.
  • Partner with teams across the organisation to integrate new programs and drive systemic reform.
  • Lead the development of the ACT's Disability Action and Inclusion Plan, ensuring inclusive and impactful outcomes.
  • Work closely with senior legal leaders to execute key organisational and service transformation initiatives.
  • Oversee project planning, documentation, and reporting to ensure high-quality and timely delivery.
  • Engage staff across ALS to shape project direction, ensuring alignment with client-centred values and priorities.

Who Are We Looking For?

A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Deep cultural competence and a commitment to delivering culturally safe and responsive services.
  • Proven success in project or start-up environments, with the ability to lead and deliver complex initiatives.
  • Strong skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, and risk management.
  • A Bachelor of Laws and relevant experience in legal or policy settings, with excellent drafting and analytical skills.
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and time management abilities in dynamic work environments.
  • Desirable: Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or bring experience working in Aboriginal community-controlled or legal policy organisations.

Why Join Us?

At ALS, you can discover a fulfilling career that truly makes an impact in the community. We also offer our staff a range of generous benefits including:

  • Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
  • Career and professional development opportunities

At ALS, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or have the capacity to obtain a current and valid Working with Children (NSW) or Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) check for this role.

We are focused on providing equal opportunities to all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support with your application including throughout the recruitment process, please let us know by reaching out to our Talent Team
