About the role

Our Estuaries and Catchements team is currently seeking to identify a talent pool of Scientists for future temporary and permanent opportunities in the next 18 months.

This role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the health and resilience of NSW's estuarine environments. You will design and deliver scientific investigations that assess the condition of estuarine systems, analyse complex environmental data and provide evidence-based insights to guide sustainable management and policy decisions. Working as part of a skilled science team, you will contribute to projects that enhance our understanding of water quality, stormwater impacts and aquatic ecosystem processes. Your work will help inform practical actions that protect biodiversity and support thriving coastal and estuarine ecosystems across the state.

You will have the chance to work both in the field and the lab, applying your technical expertise to real-world environmental challenges. The role involves close collaboration with colleagues, stakeholders, and partners to ensure research outcomes are robust, relevant and effectively communicated. You will be part of a supportive environment where innovation, integrity and scientific excellence are at the heart of our work.

About You

We are seeking motivated and skilled environmental scientists who are passionate about protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems. You are someone who brings curiosity, analytical rigour, and a collaborative spirit to your work. You are equally comfortable conducting fieldwork, interpreting data, and translating findings into actionable advice.

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in the appropriate Science
  • Expertise in aquatic ecosystem process understanding
  • Demonstrated experience in leading field works and extensive boating experience.
  • Experience in collecting, analysing, and interpreting environmental data, particularly relating to water quality and ecosystem health
  • Proven ability to produce clear, well-researched reports and advice for a range of audiences
  • A proactive mindset, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new challenges and technologies

Essential Requirements

  • Scientific qualifications in a relevant field.

The  Water, Wetlands and Coastal Science branch sits within the Science, Economics and Insights Division, which is NSW's premier environmental science function for government. The branch delivers and supports research projects and scientific programs across multiple teams; Estuaries and catchments, Coastal and Marine, Waters and Wetlands and Beachwatch.
