Note:
The role
requires a hands-on leader who is willing to engage deeply in both technical and operational details to build a disciplined engineering function.
Candidates without a proven background in embedded/electronics and a direct record of owning project delivery will not be considered.
Open to candidates in Australia (preferably Melbourne) with full working rights only.
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on
Engineering Manager
to lead a multidisciplinary team focused on embedded systems and electronics. This role is critical for establishing project delivery discipline, providing technical leadership, and scaling the team. The ideal candidate is a player-coach with deep technical expertise who can drive execution, create structure, and ensure accountability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and scale a team of approximately 7 embedded, electronics, and mechanical design engineers, growing it to 15–20.
- Establish and own the project management function: create realistic multi-year project plans, track weekly progress, manage risks, and drive timelines.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance and problem-solving, primarily in embedded firmware and electronics engineering.
- Oversee mechanical and industrial design work, ensuring integration with electronic systems.
- Serve as the primary point of accountability for engineering timelines, communicating status clearly to business leadership.
- Implement and maintain engineering processes to transition the team from ad-hoc development to scheduled delivery.
Essential Qualifications
- 10+ years of overall engineering experience, with at least 5 years combining embedded systems and electronics.
- Proven track record of personally owning and delivering complex hardware/embedded product programs over multi-year cycles.
- Direct experience creating and maintaining detailed project plans (e.g., Gantt charts), risk registers, and milestone reviews.
- Strong hands-on technical background in embedded software, board-level electronics (schematic and layout review) & system architecture integrating firmware, hardware, and mechanical components.
- Demonstrated experience in building, leading, and mentoring teams of 5–10 engineers within a larger R&D organization.
- A mindset focused on execution, structure, and ownership; comfortable with documentation, scheduling, and routine tracking.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical team members and executive leadership.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience managing relationships with mechanical/industrial design teams or external partners.
- Background in relevant domains such as IoT, robotics, industrial sensing, automotive, or medical devices.
- Experience in regulated or quality-critical environments.
- Prior experience in a startup or scale-up environment.
Does your background sit at the intersection of embedded firmware, electronics, and team leadership? If you have the discipline to build project plans and the technical depth to guide a team, we want to hear from you - DM me or apply via link.
