Internship Details

Dates: Tuesday 27 January - Friday 6 February 2026

Training Day: First day of internship (27 January 2026)

Location: Training and internship will take place in Perth CBD or West Perth

Positions Available: Up to 20 students (applicants must have completed a unit in Family Law or will have completed it by the commencement of the internship)

*Applicants must be available for the full internship.

About the Programme

The Summer Internship Programme offers final-year law students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive, people-focused family law environment via participating family law firms. This programme is ideal for students who are genuinely interested in family law and keen to understand the realities of day-to-day legal practice.

Through direct exposure to practitioners, clients, and court processes, students will gain meaningful insights into the skills, responsibilities, and professional judgement required of family lawyers.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome applications from final-year law students with a broad range of academic backgrounds. We value students who:

  • Demonstrate genuine interest in family law
  • Possess strong people skills and emotional intelligence
  • Are reliable, professional, and enthusiastic
  • Are committed to learning about the real-world practice of family law

What the Internship Includes

This voluntary internship offers students authentic exposure to the daily operations of a family law firm. Each student will be allocated to one firm for the duration of the internship. Students will have the opportunity to:  

  • Observe how family law firms operate and manage matters
  • Shadow lawyers in their day-to-day work
  • Attend court hearings and mediations, where appropriate
  • Develop an understanding of the responsibilities, professional disciplines, and workflow of family lawyers
  • Liaise with family lawyers at other participating firms and members of the Family Court at the networking event

The programme is designed to emphasise practical learning, professional development, and insightful observation, giving students a well-rounded and realistic perspective of family law practice.

Please note that successful applicants will be administratively placed with a participating law firm. Allocations will be final unless there is a conflict.
