Your role at St John of God Midland Hospital

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Anaesthetic Clinician, either a Clinical Anaesthetic Nurse or Senior Anaesthetic Technician to join our dynamic Operating Suite team.

You will provide and oversee high-quality anaesthetic care, ensuring patient safety, dignity, and comfort throughout the perioperative journey. You will also support the Nurse Manager in mentoring and developing staff, coordinate the anaesthetic team for efficient workflow, and contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

The Position

  • Promotes the development and maintenance of excellence in the delivery of anaesthetic care in the Operating Suite.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Manager Anaesthetics, Clinic Nurse – Anaesthetics and Theatre Coordinator, ensures appropriate anaesthetic staff allocation to the theatres to meet unit needs and productivity goals.
  • Supervises clinical practice of all caregivers taking responsibility for standard of care delivered.
  • Acts in the role of Anaesthetic Support person, supporting and assisting in education and troubleshooting with equipment.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership and enhances customer service among internal and external customers.
  • Liaises with the Clinical Educator in developing and delivering education and supporting professional development in the area of anaesthetics to all caregivers.
  • Acts as an educational resource and mentors junior and trainee assistants to the anaesthetist.
  • Serves as a patient advocate, protecting the rights and safety of patients at all times.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
  • Actively contributes to the development of clinical policies and procedures for anaesthetics and area of specialty.
  • Prioritises departmental workloads using resources appropriately and cost effectively.
  • Reviews products and equipment and provides documentation and education on evaluation.
  • In conjunction with appropriate others troubleshoots technical issues, and organises for repair if necessary.
  • Participates in and takes responsibility for the education of other caregivers by conducting formal and informal teaching sessions.
  • All other reasonable duties as directed by the relevant Manager/Supervisor.

Position Requirements

Senior Anaesthetic Technician

The successful applicant will hold a Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology and have recent experience in an acute anaesthetic environment, such as an Operating Suite, Day Services Unit or Day Procedure Unit. You will demonstrate sound knowledge of anaesthetic procedures and equipment, supported by substantial experience as an Anaesthetic Technician.

Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills are essential, along with the ability to lead, motivate and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A strong commitment to quality improvement principles and continuous service enhancement is also required.

Senior Anaesthetic Nurse

The successful applicant will hold current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse and have significant recent post-registration experience, with the ability to practise at an advanced level. You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, codes and standards, alongside well-developed leadership skills, including the ability to supervise, give direction and delegate effectively. The role requires the ability to plan, assess and develop team and individual performance, as well as strong communication skills to support professional accountability and foster a collaborative team environment.

You will also have strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to engage effectively with senior and operational stakeholders. A demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems, including conflict resolution, is essential. You will be committed to leading and participating in quality improvement initiatives, encompassing patient safety, care standards and operational efficiency. Additional expectations include competence with contemporary computer information systems, the ability to educate, support and mentor patients, families and caregivers, and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
