Aboriginal Engagement Lead

About Karlup
Karlup Aboriginal Corporation is a community-led organisation grounded in kaartdijin (knowledge), moort (family), budjar (place) and cultural authority.
We exist to uplift the voices of local Aboriginal families, strengthen cultural safety in services, and support community-driven solutions in the City of Swan region.
Our work is guided by principles of Nih (listening), Kuttajinoong (understanding perspectives), Kaartdijin (knowledge), Moort (family), Karnany (trust) and Wirrin (transparency).
We do what we say we will do — and we do it with community, not to community.
About the Role
The Aboriginal Engagement Lead will champion cultural safety, provide cultural supervision, and support the delivery of a family-led, trauma-informed Intensive Family Support Service for Aboriginal children and families.
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage is required for this role.
You will walk alongside families, help shape practice, guide non-Aboriginal staff, and ensure Karlup's cultural lens is embedded in everything we do.
This role is designed to:
- Strengthen Aboriginal participation and trust in services
- Ensure cultural safety is a non-negotiable standard, not an afterthought
- Support IFSS staff to work in culturally accountable ways
- Advocate for Aboriginal children, families and community priorities
- Build bridges between services, Elders, and family systems
- Empower families to lead their own cultural and safety planning
Why this role matters
Aboriginal families often experience barriers to culturally safe support.
This role exists to remove those barriers, centre Aboriginal decision-making, and ensure services are done with cultural integrity and community authority.
Key Responsibilities
Provide cultural consultation, liaison and support to IFSS staff and partner organisations
Advocate for Aboriginal families and ensure empowerment, self-determination and cultural safety
Build strong relationships with Elders, family networks, and community
Mentor and coach non-Aboriginal staff in cultural understanding and best practice
Support family-led cultural and safety plans
Participate in case reviews and service design improvements
Strengthen recruitment and retention of Aboriginal staff
Use lived experience, cultural knowledge and trauma-informed practice to guide decision making
A minimum Certificate III or IV qualification in community services or related field is required.
Candidates must have a minimum of 3-5 years experience working with Aboriginal families or communities.
Basic training in trauma-informed practice is required.
