We are currently seeking applications for a Principal Economist to join Revenue & Economics Branch at The Department of Treasury & Finance.
Remuneration: ASO8 - Salary Range ($121,107 - $125,679 p.a.).
About the opportunity:
- Reporting to Director, Economics, the Principal Economist is accountable for the provision of expert economic analysis and advice on state, national and economic conditions, relevant policy issues and economics forecasts and the presentation of advice to Ministers and senior executives, to inform the development of evidence-based policy.
- Initiating and undertaking research and analysis into significant economic issues, and leading stakeholder engagement particularly across state and Commonwealth agencies.
- Providing expert economic advice to ministers, senior managers and other stakeholders on economic conditions and trends by preparing timely reports and prompt responses to ad hoc requests.
- Supporting economic modelling, cost benefit and regulatory impact analysis undertaken in DTF and other agencies (including on the economic impacts of potential government investment initiatives) to ensure consistency and rigour with clearly articulated and defensible assumptions.
- Representing the Department on external working parties and committees.
- Building, fostering and maintaining effective relationships with staff across state and federal levels of government.
About you
As a Principal Economist, you will:
- Hold an Economics, accounting, finance related degree (minimum of a Bachelor degree level qualification).
- Possess highly developed skills and experience in econometric analysis, modelling and forecasting, as well as highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
- Enjoy contributing to leadership of a small team and supporting the development of junior staff.

- The Revenue and Economics Branch is responsible for providing advice on state revenue matters, including state taxes and goods and services tax revenue, Commonwealth-State financial relations as well as providing accurate and timely advice on economic conditions and economic forecasts. The Branch contributes to the Government's economic policy and provides advice on economic strategy with the aim of maximising economic opportunities for South Australia. Revenue and Economic Branch operate across four teams: Revenue & Inter Governmental Relations, Economics, Board of Treasurers Secretariat, and Branch Administration.
- The Economics team provides economic analysis of policy proposals, economic monitoring briefs, and forecasting to support the state budget. The team also leads the implementation of social impact bonds and other innovative finance mechanisms to strengthen the focus on service delivery outcomes.
