Lead contractor safety oversight on UQ's live construction sites and make a meaningful impact on infrastructure safety and culture
Based at our picturesque St Lucia Campus
We are seeking an experienced Manager, Health, Safety and Wellness (Construction Delivery) to lead WHS oversight across a broad portfolio of infrastructure projects at UQ. This role focuses on on-the-ground safety leadership, particularly through site-based engagement with Principal Contractors and our internal Project Management Team.
With WHS procedures and systems being developed by our Program Management Office (PMO) in partnership with an external consultant, this role is primarily focused on site-based leadership, providing operational oversight, managing contractor performance, and driving safety outcomes across UQ's active construction sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide visible WHS leadership across construction sites, regularly engaging with Principal Contractors to promote and maintain high safety standards.
Conduct site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to ensure ongoing compliance with WHS legislation, UQ policies, and contractor obligations.
Oversee contractor WHS performance and drive continuous improvement across diverse infrastructure projects.
Onboarding contractors and facilitating training aligned with PMO safety processes.
Investigate incidents and implement preventative strategies in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Promote a positive, proactive safety culture through coaching, engagement, and strong working relationships across project teams.

You'll bring extensive WHS experience, ideally supported by qualifications or equivalent experience in construction or large-scale infrastructure environments. You have a strong understanding of relevant safety legislation, including WHS, fire, and electrical safety, and a proven track record of applying these principles on high-risk or complex projects.
Your strengths lie in interpreting and applying policies, engaging confidently with contractors and stakeholders, and managing competing priorities with minimal supervision. You're highly organised, data-driven, and an effective communicator capable of producing clear, actionable reports and contributing to a culture of safety and well-being.
Experience working directly on construction sites and assessing contractor safety practices (such as method statements) is highly regarded.
