Primary objective

Reporting to the Regional Manager, Top End, the Senior Territory Business Advisor (STBA) will work with internal and external

stakeholders to grow private investment, support business growth, and create jobs in the Territory consistent with the Department's

strategic vision and the Top End Economic Growth Plan. The STBA will provide support to businesses in the Top End by providing complex

business analysis and information, advice, assistance, access to and promotion of government services and programs. Advocating on

business and industry, the STBA will provide in depth advice on matters impacting the region and local business, contributing to future

policy direction more broadly.

Context statement

The Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations (DTBAR) is responsible for shaping a competitive environment that activates

industry and business, attracts investment and drives growth to sustain a vibrant Territory economy and lifestyle. The Business and

Workforce Delivery (BWD) branch is part of Business and Regions North. BWD support businesses and not-for-profit enterprises to grow

and sustain their enterprises. The TBA will work within a multi-faceted team environment, providing a service to clients that considers

business, workforce and economic development needs and opportunities as part of a coordinated, holistic and solution-focused approach.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Work with businesses and organisations to provide strategic advice on resolving complex problems affecting their business and assist

with growth initiatives that strengthen long-term commercial viability.

  1. On behalf of business clients, collaborate and coordinate with representatives and groups from DTBAR, other Government

departments, the Commonwealth Government, peak bodies, industry groups and non-government organisations to identify and access

appropriate business support services available to new and existing businesses within the Territory.

  1. Communicate effectively with clients, collect and analyse detailed information, make recommendations to enhance business

performance, and assess eligibility for business support programs and grant opportunities.

  1. Provide leadership in developing, implementing and reviewing work processes and mentor other staff, where required.
  2. Prepare reports and presentations, assist with the organisation and hosting of events, and respond to departmental requirements as

needed, which may include drafting of ministerial communication and/or documentation.

6. Provide high-level feedback, advice and reporting to the Chief Executive and Minister for Business through the Director North and

the Executive Director of Business Workforce and Delivery.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Experience in high-level customer/client service delivery, with excellent, adaptable communication and negotiation skills.

  1. Demonstrated ability to gather and assess business and industry information; document and articulate findings of assessments; and

make recommendations, supported by evidence, in conformance with grant program eligibility requirements and program guidelines.

  1. Ability to research, analyse, develop and execute operational work plans with a regional and remote focus. Ability to project manage,

liaise and collaborate with many stakeholders, and work within a complex, changing environment.

4. Demonstrated understanding of good business governance principles and an appreciation of the challenges and opportunities facing

start-up and established businesses in regional and remote communities.

5. Understanding of current social, political and economic issues facing business and industry sectors and demonstrated experience in

developing and implementing solutions in collaboration and cooperation with internal and external stakeholders.

6. Ability to work as a positive team member, embracing diversity, committed to service, accountable and impartial in all interactions.

7. Proficient in the use of computer software and an understanding of current business technology.

  1. A current Northern Territory 'C' Class drivers licence or equivalent.

Desirable

1. Degree in a relevant field of business or demonstrated work experience

2. Knowledge of the NT economy and factors affecting economic performance and business and industry competitiveness.
