Data Engineer

Location: Canberra

Contract: Multi-Year, Commencing December 2025

Clearance: Must hold or be eligible for an Australian Government Security Clearance (Australian citizenship required)

Cynosure Consulting Group is seeking a Data Engineer with 5+ years' of substantial expertise in sustaining and improving data warehouse and analytic capability within a complex environment.

The Directorate of Estate Information System Governance (DEISG) Information Management develops and promotes Security and Estate Group (SEG) wide information management and governance in alignment with Defence Data Strategy 2.0.

Estate Data Management (EDM) is the Defence team handling quality control, modelling, extraction, uploading, and analysis of Estate Master Data. The team provides guidance, training and support for users of the Estate Data Governance Application (EDGA). The governance toolkit includes the Estate Data Dictionary (EDD), Estate Register Information Model (ERIM) and Spatial Data Management Plan (SDMP).

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining comprehensive and up-to-date documentation (which includes data models, dimensional models, ETL processes and other artefacts) for reference and knowledge sharing.
  • Monitor the performance of data warehouse queries and identify opportunities for indexing, partitioning, aggregation, and other techniques to enhance query performance in the data warehouse.
  • Ensure compliance with data management policies, data quality. Understand and implement data security measures within the data warehouse environment. Collaborate with security teams to define access controls, data encryption, and data privacy measures to protect sensitive information.

About You

  • To be successful you will be required to have substantial expertise to sustain and improve data warehouse and analytic capability within a complex environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in ETL development, data modelling and database management.
  • Practical data experience gained from working with multiple organisation.
  • Experience in working with senior stakeholders within the Estate Group and other business domains across the enterprise.
  • Deep practical information / data management experience.
  • Ability to proactively engage and represent the Estate Group to the enterprise Data Management team.
  • Experience working for a major consulting firm in the data domain (desirable, not mandatory).
  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology or equivalent industry experience.
  • Canberra-based, with the ability to obtain (or already holding) an Australian Government Security Clearance.

Mandatory Requirement

Due to the nature of the work, only Australian citizens eligible for a security clearance will be considered. Security clearance sponsorship is available for successful candidates.
