Nature School Youth Worker/Facilitator
Toogoolawa School is seeking a passionate Youth Worker to lead small-class, nature-based learning experiences (Nature School). This 0.9 FTE position (Every second Friday off) is ideal for experienced youth worker with a love for the outdoors and a commitment to inspiring students through hands-on, place-based education.
The Youth Worker will work with one class at a time, delivering engaging sessions in activities such as hiking, sailing, bushcraft, wildlife observation, and environmental education. You will also play a key role in planning, preparing, and delivering outdoor excursions and camps, including writing risk assessments and managing safety requirements.
This is a dynamic school environment where no two days are the same — one day you might be leading a hike, spotting koalas, or guiding students on a sailing excursion, and the next you could be supporting learning in the classroom or assisting with HPE lessons.
This is a contract position through to 5 December 2025, with a strong possibility of ongoing permanency.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Relevant qualification in Education, Outdoor Education, Youth Work, or related field (or experience in a similar role).
- Current Working with Children Check / Blue Card "P"
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Bronze Medallion (or Similar)
- Demonstrated ability to lead groups safely in outdoor settings.
- Ability to plan and prepare diverse learning experiences, including multi-day camps.
- Experience in writing and implementing risk assessments for outdoor activities.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the school's philosophy and ethos to achieve positive student outcomes.
Desirable
- Experience in environmental education or outdoor recreation programs.
- Knowledge of local flora, fauna, and ecosystems.
- Skills in specific outdoor activities such as sailing, hiking leadership, or wildlife tracking.
Who We Are
Toogoolawa School is an independent, non-denominational school established in 1998 and a member of Independent Schools Queensland. Note: Toogoolawa School is not a Queensland State-owned school. We are located adjacent to the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Ormeau, Queensland, about 40kms south of Brisbane CBD.
Toogoolawa School accepts boys from Years 4 to 10 who are not suited to mainstream schools, particularly those who feel overwhelmed by large numbers of students and who respond better to small groups. Our staff include qualified teachers, teacher aides, and a dedicated support team including administration, kitchen, maintenance, and cleaning staff.
The Toogoolawa model is unique to the school and is built around the five universal Human Values of Truth, Love, Peace, Right Conduct, and Non-violence. The practice of Mindfulness Meditation is central to the school's daily life.
Over more than 20 years of operation, many students have benefited from Toogoolawa's education program. Around one-third of our students have successfully returned to mainstream schooling, while others move into traineeships or TAFE courses. Approximately 85% of students leave Toogoolawa to take on some form of work or further study.
Our Commitment
Toogoolawa School supports the rights of children and young people and is committed to the safety and wellbeing of students. All applicants will undergo a screening process, and the successful applicant must comply with all school policies and procedures, including student protection requirements.
