- School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Faculty of Engineering
- Full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years
- Base salary will be in the range $114, $136, % Superannuation (Academic Level B)
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency is required to be considered for this position
- Based at our St Lucia Campus - Brisbane
This is a 2-year fixed term position with the aim of developing novel multi-port antennas integrated into composite surfaces. During the term of the position, the researcher will be expected to focus on this research project and develop new avenues of research and collaborations. Research areas of particular interest for the project include advanced antenna design, as well as unconventional material and manufacture techniques for multi-functional antenna technologies.
We are looking for engineers with strong skills in electromagnetics, simulation tools, and microwave prototyping, and an interest in the utilisation of non-conventional materials. You will collaborate across academia and industry partners in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research: The role involves the simulation, design, and analysis of conformal antennas using industry-standard electromagnetic simulation tools such as HFSS, CST, or equivalent. It includes the development of novel multi-mode antenna structures compatible with advanced composite manufacturing technologies. The position requires experimental characterisation of prototypes in both microwave labs and anechoic chambers. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams-including material scientists and manufacturing engineers-is key, along with active engagement with academic and industry partners. The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality research outputs and gain exposure to advanced composite manufacturing methods, while also participating in the preparation of competitive research funding applications.
Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, manage staff across the employee lifecycle and resolve conflicts.
Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.
This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.
About UQAs part of the UQ community, you will have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world, and within an environment where interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged.
At the core of our teaching remains our students, and their experience with us sets a foundation for success far beyond graduation. UQ has made a commitment to making education opportunities available for all Queenslanders, regardless of personal, financial, or geographical barriers.
As part of our commitment to excellence in research and professional practice in academic contexts, we are proud to provide our staff with access to world-class facilities and equipment, grant writing support, greater research funding opportunities, and other forms of staff support and development.
The greater benefits of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a Group of Eight university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, flexible working arrangements including hybrid on site/WFH options and flexible start/finish times, access to exclusive internal-only vacancies, and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.
About You- Completion or near completion of a PhD in in the discipline of applied electromagnetics and antenna engineering (or a closely related field).
- An emerging profile in research in the discipline area.
- Proficiency in electromagnetic modelling and/or commercial simulation tools (CST/HFSS), in antenna technology, RF circuits and RF measurements.
- Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and effective presentation at conferences.
- Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding is a plus.
- Evidence of industrial experience or past involvement in industry-funded projects is a plus.
- Interest and knowledge in materials and manufacturing techniques is a plus.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, etc.
Work Rights:
Australian Citizenship or Australian permanent residency: It is a requirement of this position that the applicant is an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
