About the Role

Gov Recruit is seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support a high-security government environment as part of a specialist ICT Platforms Team. This position focuses on implementing, managing, and uplifting VMware virtualisation infrastructure across secure networks and vessel environments that underpin critical national operations.

You'll work within a multidisciplinary team of APS and contractor specialists delivering advanced infrastructure capabilities to ensure system availability, reliability, and performance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, design, and support VMware server and desktop (Horizon) environments across secure platforms.
  • Perform upgrades, patching, and continuous improvement of VMware infrastructure.
  • Implement and maintain ICT hardware configurations for seamless virtualisation operations.
  • Develop and maintain environment documentation, technical specifications, and system reports.
  • Deliver standard operating procedures, system designs, and incident reports.
  • Mentor and transfer knowledge to internal technical staff.
  • Lead disaster recovery planning, risk management, and capacity planning.
  • Drive maturity uplift through automation and VMware best-practice design.

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive hands-on experience with VMware products in large enterprise or government environments.
  • Proven capability to lead infrastructure design, deployment, and uplift projects.
  • Strong documentation, analysis, and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ITIL and SFIA-aligned processes.
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent certification preferred.

  • Familiarity with SFIA Level 4–5 competencies:

  • Availability Management (L5)

  • IT Infrastructure (L4)
  • Problem Management (L4)
  • Systems Design (L5)
  • Systems Installation & Removal (L5)

Security & Work Arrangements

  • Security Clearance: Must hold or be able to obtain NV1 (Negative Vetting Level 1).
  • Location: Canberra ACT — onsite 5 days per week (no remote options).
  • Hours: Up to 40 hours per week (written approval required for overtime).
