Applications are invited to fill the Chairperson vacancy on the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Board. The position is remunerated and held on a part-time basis for a period of up to five years.
Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience or knowledge in at least one of the following fields:
i. the media industry;
ii. broadcasting and digital media;
iii. digital technologies in any sector other than the media sector;
iv. business or financial management;
v. creative arts;
vi. educational content creation;
vii. corporate governance, including managing large and/or complex operations in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors;
viii. cultural industry and/or cultural policy, including its administration; or
ix. industrial relations including an understanding of interests of employees.
Substantive experience in digital innovation or the legal sector is also desirable.
The successful applicant must possess:
i. high-level leadership and vision;
ii. financial literacy;
iii. high-level judgement;
iv. the highest standards of professional and personal integrity;
v. an understanding of, or the ability to credibly represent, the communication needs of Australia's multicultural society, including ethnic and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; and
vi. an understanding of the media environment, in particular the role of the SBS as a multilingual and multicultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander broadcaster, its Charter and its place within the Australian community.
Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to high standards of governance, almost certainly gained from extensive experience serving on boards, if not as a chair.
The selection criteria for this position is set out in the Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (Non executive Director—Selection Criteria) Determination 2024. Due regard will be paid to the Board's gender, diversity and geographic balance, in the interests of ensuring that the Board reflects the diversity of the Australian community and SBS's audience.
An independent Nomination Panel will assess applicants and provide recommendations to the Minister for Communications. The Government will then make a recommendation to the Governor-General, who is responsible for appointing the Chairperson.
