Our state-of-the-art facility in Wangara includes a protective coatings facility, spray booths, abrasive blasting booths, and drying ovens.
Role Overview
The Industrial Spraypainter is responsible for preparing, applying, and finishing protective coatings on fabricated metal components, pipe spools, structural steel, and other engineered parts in line with required specifications (e.g. corrosion protection, wear protection, finishing). The role ensures that all work meets quality, safety and productivity standards set by Nix Engineering Group.
Key Responsibilities
- Grinding, sanding, and cleaning surfaces of items to be painted to ensure proper adhesion of coatings.
- Loading paint, oil, lacquer, varnish, rustproofing agents, and other specified coating materials into spray equipment.
- Adjusting and connecting hoses, spray nozzles, regulators etc., ensuring correct spray pressure and pattern.
- Positioning or securing workpieces in spray booths, or on conveyors / rotating fixtures, to allow even, complete coating coverage.
- Applying coatings uniformly using spray, mist, or other methods; ensuring finish meets thickness, appearance, and performance specifications.
- Moving coated items to drying/curing areas; operating drying ovens, heaters, airflow / extraction fans as required.
- Monitoring curing/drying processes for timing, temperature, ventilation, etc.
- Cleaning and maintaining spray equipment: nozzles, containers, hoses; keeping spray booths, prep areas clean and compliant with safety standards.
- May be required to operate dipping baths for coating / finishing.
- May mix coating solutions, adjust ratios, monitor and regulate their temperature as per specifications.
- Working in conjunction with quality control / inspection teams to ensure coatings meet required standards (e.g. DFT / WFT measurements, surface finish).
- Reporting defects, inconsistencies, or problems in coating materials, surfaces, or equipment.
- Adhering to workplace health & safety procedures, including handling of hazardous substances, use of protective equipment and safe ventilation.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience as an industrial spray painter (especially in heavy fabrication / mining / water infrastructure contexts)
- Knowledge of different coating types (epoxy, polyurethane, primers, rust‐proof coatings, etc.) and their application.
- Ability to read and interpret job specifications, surface treatment standards, technical drawings.
- Familiarity with tools and techniques: power and hand tools, grinders, sanders, spray guns, dipping baths, oven / curing equipment.
- Understanding of safety procedures: handling of hazardous materials, PPE, ventilation, cleaning, environmental compliance.
- Good organisational skills ‐ managing work flow, timings, shifting between jobs, maintaining clean and efficient workspace.
- Physical fitness; able to lift, carry, and position workpieces; able to work in varied positions / heights as needed.
- Valid driver's licence may be beneficial.
- Forklift / overhead crane experience or ticket may be advantageous.
