The Australian Refugee Association Inc. (ARA) is a community-based organisation providing settlement, migration, and other forms of assistance to refugees, migrants and other people of concern.
As a member of our team, you will be supporting new arrivals in South Australia to achieve their social, economic, cultural and community participation goals. You will be making a difference in the lives of individuals and families as they re-establish themselves in a new home.
ARA's financial capability programs, delivered in partnership with Uniting Care Wesley Bowden (UCWB), focus on early intervention and prevention, helping clients navigate Australia's financial systems in a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment. The Financial Capability Worker supports newly arrived refugees and migrants to develop essential financial skills and confidence, contributing to long-term settlement outcomes such as economic wellbeing, independence, and community participation.
ROLE SUMMARY
The role delivers tailored financial literacy support through one-on-one sessions, group workshops, and community education, covering practical topics including budgeting, banking, money management, taxation, and superannuation. Services are designed to meet the diverse needs of clients from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support ARA's drop-in and intake services, assessing clients' social, emotional, and practical needs.
- Develop and implement tailored case management plans.
- Deliver culturally sensitive services that respect diverse backgrounds.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders for coordinated client support.
- Maintain regular client engagement to monitor progress and provide guidance.
- Assist clients in navigating complex systems, including social welfare and mainstream services.
- Provide crisis intervention and escalate urgent concerns as needed.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with sector practices.
- Deliver financial literacy workshops and one-on-one coaching on budgeting, saving, banking, credit, taxation, and superannuation.
- Share information on financial resources, including government programs and community support.
- Advocate for clients' financial rights and connect them with relevant services.
- Refer clients to financial counsellors and other appropriate supports.
- Work with community groups to promote financial inclusion and well-being.
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions and progress in line with ARA and UCWB standards, ensuring confidentiality and compliance.
This position is being offered a part time (0.8 FTE) on a fixed term contract, based at ARA's office in Salisbury.
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum Certificate III in Community Services Work (or equivalent).
- Completion of the following financial literacy units (or equivalent):
- CHCEDU005 – Identify financial literacy education needs;
- CHCEDU006 – Improve fundamental financial literacy skills;
- CHCEDU007 – Provide group education on consumer credit and debt.
- Diploma-level qualifications or higher in the Community Services sector only require completion of the above units.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Strong understanding of the refugee and migrant settlement experience, with demonstrated cultural competence.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Ability to deliver financial literacy education in both individual and group settings.
- Strong case management, advocacy, and referral skills
- Fluency in languages commonly spoken by refugees and migrants in Australia is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in providing client-centered support to CALD communities.
- Experience working with trauma-affected individuals or vulnerable populations.
- Proven ability to manage caseloads, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
