About the role

The RTO division is responsible for the real-time operation of the power system, where the primary focus is on maintaining power system security, with power system reliability and operation of the market systems being high priority secondary objectives.  This is achieved through close collaboration with generators and network service providers, as well as several departments within AEMO.

The Australian Energy system is going through a once in a generation energy transition which is heavily impacting the NEM Real Time Operations (RTO) control room and AEMO's ability to operate the power system and market effectively and efficiently. Now more than ever, effective collaboration between NEM RTO and the major change driving areas of AEMO's business is vital to AEMO's success. By providing technical and subject matter expertise to support vital projects and change management and process improvement initiatives, you will help AEMO deliver a step change in its power system operation and tooling capabilities.

What you will be doing

  • Support priority actionable Project, Reform and OTP initiatives on behalf of RTO and liaise with control room staff as required to achieve meaningful positive outcomes for Operations and AEMO.
  • Support BAU and emergency activities related to operation of the power system such as procedure drafting, delivering training to staff, review of critical documentation and supporting AEMO's BCP and emergency management plans.
  • Provide insights and practical advice to teams outside of NEM RTO and operations on how AEMO Operates the power system and market to drive positive outcomes for NEM RTO and AEMO.
  • Build upon and enhance RTO's relationship with critical supporting functions across AEMO including Operational Support, Modelling and Engineering and Digital. Support the upskilling and support control room staff and share knowledge leveraging relevant experience and expertise.
  • Support the development and review of Operational Standards and Procedures and assist with the development and review of incident reports and Control room procedures.
  • Managing incidents in accordance with the Power System Emergency Management Plan (where required)

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (preferably in Electrical Engineering).
  • Expert knowledge of power system operations, including knowledge of multiple of the following areas: power system constraints, outage planning, analysis and modelling, emergency management generator connection requirements.
  • Previous experience in successfully contributing to projects and delivering, preferably in the field of power systems operations or Market operations.
  • Strong interpretative and problem-solving skills, with an ability to make timely decisions to resolve complex technical issues based on a balance of analysis, wisdom, experience and practical judgement, with and without precedents.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with proven interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills, and the ability to manage stakeholder expectations.
