About the Role:
Join a purpose-driven organisation helping children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) build safety, independence, and confidence through professionally trained Assistance Dogs.
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Assistance Dog Instructor to deliver life-changing programs to children and their families. This full-time role involves assessing and training Assistance Dogs, conducting client training, and working closely with Allied Health professionals to support tailored, evidence-based outcomes.
Key responsibilities include, but is not limited to:
- Train and assess Assistance Dogs in line with Assistance Dog International Standard
- Teaching dogs to respond to verbal and non-verbal ques and addressing behavioural problems
- Training dogs to appropriately navigate public transport and private vehicles
- Providing preventative dog care against parasites and illnesses
- Match dogs to clients and deliver centre-based and home-based training.
- Collaborate with Allied Health staff to manage referrals, assessments and information sessions.
- Complete NDIS documentation including reports, funding applications, and reviews.
- Monitor canine health and refer for veterinary care when needed.
- Provide ongoing support and aftercare for Assistance Dog partnerships.
- Maintain accurate client, volunteer, and dog records in internal systems and assist in continuous improvement processes.
- Support and train volunteer handlers and contribute to program improvement.
- Advocate for access and equity for clients and uphold the organisation's values and public image.
- Up-to-date knowledge of trends and developments in relation to Assistance Dog services, including training techniques, practices, policies and legislation
- Other duties as reasonably required.
Salary:$87,969.43-$105,194.88 depending on experience.
Skills And Experiences
Essential Skills and Attributes:
- Recognised qualification and experience in Assistance Dog Training and service provision as recognised by Assistance Dogs International (ADI).
- Knowledge of Assistance Dogs practices
- Strong understanding of Autism and family-centred practice.
- Proven ability to assess and respond to dog behaviour.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of organisation, planning, and stress management.
- Ability to manage the physical demands and inherent requirements of the job and complete the tasks and duties on time.
- Strong teamwork ethic and ability to work independently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
Desirable:
- Background in Allied Health, teaching or training adults/children
- Effective public presentation skills.
- Broad base of experience in one or more IGDF/ADI accredited organisations.
- National Police Clearance
- NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Working with Children's Check
- Valid Driver's Licence
